CORE Opens Convention BALTIMORE, Md. UPI—The militant Congress of Racial" Equality (CORE) opened its national convention today as its top official confirmed reports the organization may abandon nonviolence and assert the Negroes’ right to self defense. National Director Floyd B. McKissick, contacted by telephone at a hotel, said a story appearing in a Baltimore newspaper was “substantially correct’’ in quoting him as saying "the American way of violence” would replace “the Christian way of nonviolence in the civil rights movement.” In an earlier statement released to newsmen, McKissick said "the black man’s cup is close to running over. He isn’t going to turn in his gun ... and his dignity as a man.” CORE associate national di- i rector Lincoln O. Lynch, who i during the convention last year i in Durham, N.C., supported a resolution declaring that people subjected to violence should be allowed to retaliate, is said to i be strongly in favor of moving in the direction of selfprotection for civil rights workers.

Satellite Is 'Ready, Waiting' CAPE KENNEDY UPI — The sun poked through broken clouds today as the countdown proceeded smoothly toward the launch of a radiation monitoring satellite into orbit around the moon. Squally weather from a tropical disturbance thwarted an attempt to get the 206-pound spacecraft off on its Delta rocket Thursday, but skies began to clear early today and project officials predicted weather would no longer be a problem. The sleek Delta was aiming for a blastoff during a two- ] minute period starting at 12:02 ; p.m. EDT. — (Pickup 4th phg: It was) — |
