Tournament Tension Is Cause of Misplay By Alfred Shienwold Twenty hands of bridge produce no starin when you’re playing for coffee and cake, but they give you the jim-jams when the championship of the world is at stake. The strain caused Sammy Kehela, one of the world’s great bridge experts, to misplay a game hand during the world team cham--pionships a few weeks ago in Italy. South dealer Morth-South vulnerable NORTH 4 K862 "* 5 * O 109762. - * 109 3 - WEST EAST ' * A 1094 4 5 V KQ104 V 9632 O QJ O 853 *187 *Q6542 SOUTH 4 QJ73 —* VAJ87 O AK4 - 4 AK • South West North East i '* i " 2 NT Pass 3 4 Pass 3 4 4 4 All Pan Opening lead — 0 Q
Kehela took the first trick with the ace of diamonds and returned the queen of spades to West’s ace. Back came the queen of hearts. Since West had explained his leads, Kehela knew that West had the king of hearts. Kehela had to guess whether the opening lead was a singleton queen or from the doubleton Q-J of diamonds. Declarer led a spade to the king and got to his hand twice with high clubs to niff two low hearts in dummy. Then he led the ten of diamonds. Kehela thought for a long time and then played the low diamond from his hand. West won, cashed the jack of hearts and eventually got a second trump trick to defeat the contract SURE PLAY After leading a low spade to dummy’s king at the fourth trick, Kehela should lead a low diamond to the king. Since the jack happens to drop. South has
no further problem. Even If West can ruff the king of diamonds he cannot defeat the contract If West returns a trump or a club. South draws the last trump and gives up a diamond trick. Dummy’s good diamonds make the rest easy. If West return the king of hearts, South ruffs in dummy, gets to his hand with a club and ruffs another heart. Back with a club to draw the last trump, and South has ten tricks. If West return a low heart instead of the king, South lets it ride to the jack. Then he draws West’s last trump and gives up a diamond. A very complicated hand, but not too difficult for one of the world’s great players—except for a slight case of tournament tension. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with 2 NT, and the next player passes. You hold: S-5; H-9 6 3 2; D-8 5 3; C-Q 6 5 4 2. What do you say? Answer: Pass. The hand is not quite good enough for a response to the opening bid of 2 NT.
Gen. De Gaulle To Ask Backing Of Soviet Union MOSCOW UPI—French President Charles de Gaulle will ask the Soviet Union to join him In possible moves to end the Vietnamese war, French sources said today. Although the French president does not believe the time is ripe now for a Vietnamese peace conference, they said, De Gaulle wants Russian backing when he feels prospects are good for bringing the dispute to the negotiating table. The report came as De Gaulle entered his second day of talks with Russia’s top leaders. Viet Nam was known to be high on the agenda at the Kremlin meeting. Both De Gaulle and the Russians hold similar views in many respects on the war in Viet Nam. France and Russia both oppose any further escalation of the war, both believe the war can only be won at the conference table and both want the
United States to pull out of Southeast Asia as part of any Viet Nam peace settlement. Officials recalled that De Gaulle and the Soviets agreed early in 1964 to work together to get peace talks started. But these efforts fizzled when the Russians demanded that the Americans end bombing raids on North Viet Nam as a precondition. De Gaulle insisted no strings should be attached to convening at a peace conference. But French sources said De Gaulle remains deeply concerned—and believes that the Russians share his feeling—that Viet Nam might explode into a third world war. That is why, they said, De Gaulle is closely watching for the right moment to act in a peace making capacity and hopes that the Russians will go along with him. He was also known to have been putting out cautious feelers in both Peking and Hanoi. Talks between De Gaulle and Soviet officials, including Premier Alexei N. Kosygin and party Secretary General Leonid Brezhnev, began Tuesday.

U Thant Plans Moscow Talks UNITED NATIONS, N. Y. UPI — Secretary General U Thant will make a surprise trip to Moscow for top level discussions this summer, highly reliable sources said today. It was presumed Thant would go to the Kremlin to discuss his three-point plan for settlement of the Viet Nam war, which he described Monday as “one of the most barbarous wars in history.’ * Exact timing of Thant’s Moscow trip was not known. But it was certain he would first return to New York after a European trip scheduled for 10 days beginning next week. It was not known if Thant would make public his delayed decision on whether to stand for another term as secretary general before going to Moscow. But this was not likely to be a major factor in his Kremlin talks, since the Soviet Union, like the United States, Britain and France, has given him an endorsement of sorts for a new term. Thant is scheduled to leave next Wednesday for U.N. meeting in Turin and Geneva, returning July 9. Although he had said previously he would announce in June his decision on whether to “make himself available” for another term as secretary general, he told a luncheon of the U.N. Correspondents Association Monday he had decided to defer his announcement until after his return from Europe. Thant’s tenure in office, in which he succeeded the late Dag Hammarskjold in 1961, expires Nov. 3.
