Appellate Court Cuts Judgment NEW YORK UPI — An Appellate Court Tuesday cut to $155,785 a judgment against Rep. Adam Clayton Powell, DN.Y., convicted of slandering a Harlem woman by calling her a “bag woman” (graft collector) for corrupt police. A judgment of $575,000 in damages was returned against the Harlem congressman last December. Powell made the defamatory remark while appearing on a television show six years ago. The $575,000, award to Mrs. Esther James, a 68-year-old widow, was set as the result of charges that Powell and his wife, Yvette, fraudulently trans' ferred ownership of property to avoid paying Mrs. James the original damage judgment of $211,500, later reduced to $46,500. The case has been marked by a maze of court actions, including appeals, stays, audits of Powell’s finances and contempt of court citations for the congressman’s repeated failures to appear in court as ordered. One contempt action still is pending. Mrs. James’ attorney, Raymond Rubin, said he expected the $155,000 to be paid by month's end. The reduced figure includes $33,250 owed on the original $46,500 judgment, $22,500 in travel and legal expenses and $100,000 in punitive damages.
Chinese Premier -Visits Romania BUCHAREST UPI—Romania prepared a simple welcome today for Communist Chinese Premier Chou En-lai whose visit could place new strains on the Russian-Chinese feud and fan Bucharest’s desires for independence from the Sqviet bloc. Only one slogan-bearing banner fluttered in the hot breeze to greet the Chinese official on his expected arrival around . noon. It hung at the Central Committee headquarters of the Romanian Communist party and proclaimed “long live Romanian. Chinese friendship.” Chou’s visit, originally scheduled fqr May, was twice postponed during a sequence of events that sent Soviet Communist party chief Leonid Brezhnev on a secret trip to Bucharest to smooth over Romanian criticism of Rusian military presence in Eastern Europe. Romanian Communist party General Secretary Nikolai Ceausescu has called the Russiandominated Warsaw Pact military alliance an “anachronism" and urged that the Communist pact and NATO be dissolved. He also called for withdrawal of both Soviet and American troops from Europe. Chou’s visit, diplomatic observers noted, coming before the scheduled summit meeting of East European and Russian leaders in Bucharest next month provides the Chinese with an opportunity to encourage Romania’s independence.

Shopping Center Shootout Staged ARLINGTON, Va. UPI — Police with shotguns and attack dogs broke up a shopping center shootout between rival gangs Wednesdaj\ Sixteen youths were arrested. One gang member was believed to be wounded and was being sought. Several state policemen were hit but not injured by shotgun pellets in a barrage of shots exchanged by the gangs at a shopping area in this Washington suburb. Police said the gangs—"The Avengers” and the “The Pagans” — had clashed before. Their most recent fight last weekend was the apparent spark for the shooting that started shortly before midnight Tuesday. The gangs are motorcycle and hot rod drivers who wear the black leather jacket of the motorcycle rider. The Avengers decorate theirs with a German iron cross, the Pagans use a skull and crossbones. Detective Charles Mackey of the Arlington County Police Department said he and his men were tipped in advance about the fight but had to stand aside as the Avengers gathered. “There was nothing we could do,” he said. “They were on private property and there was nothing we could move them on for.”
Alecd Ttenoger's Vkw By Janet Staub With the use of all types of communication systems advertising has become a well known term in our world of today. Perhaps the most talked about advertisement is the television commercial. Advertising executives rack their brains thinking of new and different ways to show their various products so that the products will sell. Most commercials are alike. Teenagers are known by their fads and advertising on television goes by the same thing. For a while big baseball players are seen trying to sell the products. Then it changes and no person is shown, just animals. All at once all of the big name scientists are making TV appearances to try to promote something. The classified ads in newspapers are usually directly to the point of the thing wanted to get or wanted to get rid of. Magazines show many worthwhile things for the consumer to purchase. Costing the common people money but the sender little is the type of advertisement mailed to “occupant.” Really that is a false statement because the sender has them printed and usually enlarges his stock for the event. The common people
don’t reaSy lose money on It If they don’t buy the things and use the paper for some useful purpose such as lighting a grill. By the Way: All cars nowadays are made with turn signals, why don’t the driver come equipped to automatically use them?
