Veep Addresses Irmy Cadets WEST POINT, N. Y. UPI — Vice Bceqgient Hubert H. Humphrey said Wednesday America seeks to “build bridges” to Communist China and Asia in i an effort that will continue “for t the rest of; this century.” • He likened this policy to that * now functioning with Russia I and the Eastern European $ satellites.
t
t Asian problems will "not dis-
f appear” with a settlement of ♦ the Viet Nam War, the Vice 1 President said in a commence4 ment address prepared for de < livery at the U. S. Military 2 Academy. The nation must I learn “patience and perspecttive” in the years ahead. I Humphrey’s speech was the ^latest reflection of administraJ lion policy on Asia, and seemed Stb serve as an appeal to-both “doves” and “hawks” concem-

S After reciting the oftstated Ju. S. goals of helping free Asian J nations to resist aggression, to 4 fight poverty, ignorance and Edisease, and to promote region|al cooperation, Humphrey ad-

292 North Viet Soldiers Killed SAIGON UPI — Paratroops of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division blunted a Communist offensive in the Central Highlands of South Viet Nam Wednesday and killed 292 men of a North Vietnamese battalion in a twoday battle that often was hand-to-hand. It was some of the bloodiest fighting of the war. It began at 2 a.m. Tuesday when the Com munists attacked with mortars and machineguns and sent human waves of troops against the American positions to the sound of bugles. The Americans fell back, regrouped and counterattacked. Paratroopers driven from their positions fixed bayonets and charged, the steel flashing in the rising sun. They gained back lost ground and moved on until at the end the Communist unit was a desperate one fighting for survival. The battle was fought In the mountain jungles of Kontum province 300 miles north of Saigon. Military spokesmen said the Communists threw in at least a full regiment — 1,200 men — of elite North Vietnamese regular troops. The men of the “Screaming Eagles” called in artillery and strike planes, defeating the attackers in the area where once the Viet Cong roamed almost unchallenged. An American spokesman said U.S. losses were “light over-all.”

Appellate Court Upholds Ruling INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The Indiana Appellate Court ruled that the state cannot hold a former Vigo County auditor liable for recovery of sums he paid for road materials and labor without a contract. The court upheld Vigo Superior Court which ruled in favor of former auditor Everett J. Acree and his bonding company, Standard Accident Insurance Co. Evidence was that Acree, auditor from 1956 to 1959, paid $65,662 to two firms for paving material and labor for which the State Board of Accounts reported there were no contracts. Indiana through the then Atty. Gen. Edwin K. Steers mitiated the suit against Acree and the bonding company in an effort to force reimbursement. However, the high court in an opinion written by Judge G. Remy Bierly, concluded that Acree “acted in a manner devoid of dishonesty, secrecy, deceit and pecuniary gain and that the municipality obtained value received for money spent”
