Hot Primary In California
SAN FRANCISCO UPI — Ronald Reagan, the actor-poli-tician, and George Christopher, the dairyman-politician, pitted charm vs. experience today in a struggle for California’s Republican Gubernatorial nomination. The primary election in the nation’s most populous state also featured Democratic Gov. Edmund G. (Pat) Brown’s bid | for an unprecedented nominaj tion to seek a third consecutive term. Samuel W. Don’t Waste A Trump For A Trump Finesse By Alfred Sheinwold The easiest way to take a diamond finesse is to lead a diamond. A more devious way, possible only if diamonds are trumps, i* to lead a side suit when you are ready to overruff the opponent. This devious way may help you keep one trump for other purposes. South ruffs the second round of hearts and leads the ace of diamonds, expecting an easy time. West discards a heart, and South must revise his expectations. South must finesse to draw East’s trumps, but he will wind up in the garbage can if he uses STATE OF INDIANA

Opening lead —- 9? Q Suppose South leads a club to dummy’s king and returns a trump. Declarer can win a finesse with the ten of diamonds and can then draw the rest of the trumps. But then dummy is out of trumps and neither the spades nor the clubs can be run. South must give up at least one trick. CASH SPADES South makes the contract easily by cashing the king and queen of spades before leading a club to dummy’s king. Then he leads the ace of spades from dummy. East cannot stay out of trouble by failing to ruff. Declarer can then lead three good spades from dummy and discard three low clubs from his hand. He will still be in dummy, so can lead a trump for the finesse. South draws all of the trumps and takes the last trick with the ace of clubs. If East ruffs a spade, South over-ruffs. This is a sort of finesse, and South draws the rest of the trumps. The vita! difference is that one trump is still left in dummy. South cashes the ace of clubs and ruffs a club, after which dummy wins the rest of the tricks with any spades that are still
left
DAILY QUESTION As dealer, j'ou hold: S-A J 6 5 2; H-K 4; D-8 7 5 3; C-K 6. What do you say? Answer: Pass. You have 11 points in high cards and 2 points for the doubletons, enough for an optional opening bid. In this case you decide against the bid because your spot-cards are worthless. Put a sprinkling of tens and nines in the hand and you would open th« bidding with one spade.
Viet Cong Hit Helicopter Base SAIGON UPI — Viet Cong guerrillas sweeping down from the mountains attacked the huge U. S . helicopter base at An Khe for the second time in a month, inflicting “light” casualties on defending U.S. Army forces, a military spokesman disclosed Monday. The 57 millimeter recoilless rifle attack Sunday night on the massive An Khe base in the Central Highlands did little damage but U. S. military commanders were reported tightening anti-guerrilla security around the jungle field. The Viet Cong attack hit both the helicopter field—largest in the world—and the steel blanket airstrip of the U. S. 1st Air Cavalry Division’s base camp. But a spokesman said no planes were damaged at the installations 260 miles north of Saigon. It was from the An Khe base that the 1st Air Cavalry mounted “Operation Crazy Horse” that ended Monday, hailed by military spokesmen as one of the Allies greatest victories of
the war.
Negroes Voting In Mississippi JACKSON, Miss. UPI —Mississippi voters, including almost 100,000 Negroes registered in the past year, go to the polls today in primary elections for five congressional seats and the post held by Democratic Sen. James O. Eastland. Justice Department election observers were on hand in 14 counties with substantial numbers of Negro voters. But the total Negro vote was expected to have little impact on the outcome of the primaries. Eastland, 61, a pillar of Senate resistance to civil rights, and other white incumbents and office-seekers were expected to far outdistance six civil rights candidates. Atty. Gen. Nicholas Katzenbach sent his top racial troubleshooter, John Doar, to Mississippi to head the forces and warned that the FBI take action against any incidents of violence aimed at Negro voters. Doar was forced to rush away from his command post, however, to take part in the investigation of the wounding of Negro James Meredith as he walked down a Mississippi highway to encourage Negroes to register to vote. Eastland, one of the most powerful men in Mississippi politics, was opposed by a political unknown, Meridian cattleman, Charles Masby and by Clifton Whitley of Holly Springs, a Negro backed by the militant Freedom Democratic party.
ick mayor of Los Angeles, was Brown’s chief opponent in a field of six. The California primary was viewed as a limited test of President Johnson’s Viet Nam policies. The war was a major issue in races for 10 of the state’s 38 congressional seats. The nonincumbent “doves” were generally opposing well-entrenched congressmen. Reagan, 55, was making his first political foray. He was rated the favorite over Christopher, former two-term mayor of San Francisco and a prominent dairyman. A forecast for gain in Northern California, where Christopher expected his most solid support, dimmed the 57-year-old Greek immigrant’s chances of overcoming Reagan’s apparent advantage in more populous Southern California. About 5.1 million of the state’s 7.8 million registered voters — a record primary total — were expected to cast ballots, barring a major storm. Reagan and Christ o p h e r wound up their campaigns Mon-
day with fast-paced chartered airliner hops around the state. At a firecracker-popping rally in San Francisco, Christopher termed polls which showed him badly behind Reagan as “meaningless” in the light of his no-punches-pulled final campaign effort. “I can’t help but feel optimistic, but I’ll be chewing my fingernails Tuesday night,” Reagan said. “Whatever happens, I know we can win in November.”
