Poafl Concede Defeat Before. You’re Beaten By Alfred Shelnwold You have slightly better than an even chance to win four tricks with K-Q-10-4 in the dummy and A-9-2 in your hand. You can vastly improve your chance if you know something about the location of the missing cards. Sooth dealer

Declarer won the first trick with the ace of clubs, drew three rounds of trumps and gave up a club. East returned a club, and dummy ruffed. Needing four heart tricks, South tried the normal play of leading out the three top cards. When the Jack did not drop. South announced: “I can’t eat the diamond," And he conceded down one. South had already muffed his best chance for the contract, but ,he could still make the slam by proper play. It was foolish to give up.

BLACK SUITS The play of the black suits reveals that East started with seven clubs and two spades. There is room in the East hand for only four red cards. South should cash the king and ace of hearts, discovering that East started with at least two hearts. Declared should then take the ace and king of diamonds and discovers that East started also with two diamonds. This accounts for all the red cards that East can possibly hold. South can therefore lead the last heart from his hand and confidently finesse with dummy’s ten. The slam Is then assured. When South mistakenly led out three top hearts, he could still make the hand. He gets to his hand with the king of diamonds and leads the last trump. West can hold only two cards, and one of them must be the jack of hearts. He must therefore come down to one diamond. Declarer throws the heart from dummy and takes the last two tricks with the ace and nine of diamonds. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one diamond, and the next player passes. You hold: S-5 2; H-6 3; D-J 4; C-K J 9 8 6 4 3. What do you say? Answer: Pass. This hand is so poor that you cannot respond to an opening bid of one in spades, hearts or diamonds. You would raise an opening bid of one club to two clubs.

Mon Arrested As Coin Thief INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Marion County Sheriff’s detectives said Wednesday they would seek extradition of an Illinois man arrested in Chicago, who has admitted robbing an Indianapolis coin dealer. Chicago police said David Shafer, 26, Maywood, HI., was arrested after a brief foot chase Tuesday on the city’s near north side. They said they found personal checks in his pocket bearing the name of Wilson Pollard, whose home was robbed Sunday night. Pollard, 61, his wife, Alberta, and her mother, Mrs. Hespy Sieg, 73, were bound and chained to a water pipe in the basement of Pollard’s home late Sunday night by two masked men who

escaped tat Pollard’s 1966 model car with a coin collection valued at $10,000, $400 in cash and jewelry. Pollard told police the two men jumped him when he parked his car and then forced him to return to the house. Authorities said Mrs. Pollard attempted to struggle wtih the men and was struck on the head. She was reported in satisfactory condition at Community Hospital here Wednesday, where she was taken after the robbery. The bandits neglected to bind Mrs. Sieg’s invalid husband, who crawled to the basement and freed Mrs. Pollard, who in turn freed her husband.

A Knock Can Be A Boost When It Comes At Door

By ROBERTA ROESCH The human spirit needs the lift that comes from being noticed by the persons whose paths we cross every day. So if you want to be wellhked because you give people that lift; establish good human relationships at home and in your job whenever you can. I was reminded of this human need only a few days ago when I was spending some time at home trying to work on a project that I was getting no where with. Complete And Compounded My complete frustration, brought on by my lack of success, was compounded b y a headache and the feeling that I had nothing to offer to the project which I had taken on. As I sat at my desk, disgusted and dissatisfied, I heard a knock on an entrance at the side of the house. When I opened the door, there was the meter man. I was just about to glower with a grumpy grimace that would have advertised how I felt But because the day was so beautiful (and because I have never really be-

Court Rules On Motorized Cart INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The Indiana Appellate Court has ruled that an under-age driver of a motorized cart operated on a public road is subject to the same laws which govern other motor vehicles. The court ruled in a damage suit filed on behalf of Richard Ewing, then 11, who was hit by a car at a Starke County road intersection. St. Joseph County Superior Court had ruled in favor of Alice Biddle, driver of the car, who was named defendant in the damage suit. Judge George Prime, who wrote the high court opinion, said the main question to determine was whether laws on motor vehicles apply to carts. He said the court concluded that “to give legal sanction to the operation of automobiles, bicycles or any other motor-driv-en vehicles by minors or teenagers with less than ordinary care for the safety of others would be impractical as well as dangerous.” Evidence in the trial was that the cart had no brakes and was stopped by the operator’s dragging his feet.

lieved that any of us ever has the right to inflict our depressions on others), I managed to give him a smile and a halfway decent “Good Morning.” Response In Kind “Good morning to you, ma’am," he smiled. “It’s good to hear those words. Do you know I have been working three hours and yours is the first ‘Good morning’ I received? Nobody else has bothered to give me the time of day.” That thought in itself Is Incredible and I hate to think that It is true. But somehow the way the man spoke to me lifted my spirits a bit and made me feel that, after all, I might have a few attributes, despite my dissatisfaction with the work I was trying to do. I felt better when I returned to my desk. And then a few minutes later my spirits lifted even more when the man stuck his head through the door on the way out and told me to have a good day in a voice that sounded like he meant It. “Call us whenever you need us,” he said as he went out. I knew as I watched him, whistling as he went on to the

And I knew by the way I was feeling that mine were in better shape, too, simply because two people had taken the time to pay tribute to the constant and everyday need we have to i be noticed by other persons. When you sense this need in I people and try to respond to it, you will find it will bring you daily success in getting along with them. At the same time, their response to you will i give you a welcome lift, too. Rules To Follow So when under the pressures of working, you are tempted to overlook people, follow these rules: (1) Give everyone you meet the time of day. (2) Make him feel important. (S) Respect him as a person for the work he is doing.
