Whites Predict Trouble For Negro Sheriff TUSKEGEE, Ala. UPI—“The first time a Negro officer puts his hand on a white woman, there’s going to be trouble.” A white deputy was discussing Wednesday the “potential racial trouble” facing this town in Alabama’s black soil belt if Negro sheriff nominee Lucius Amerison takes office. Amerison, a 32-year-old former paratrooper and Korean
War veteran, defeated white Sheriff Harvey Sadler in a Democratic primary runoff Tuesday. Two other Negroes also won races In Macon County where Negroes outnumber whites by more than 5 to 1. The deputy predicted that Amerison couldn’t handle the job if he becomes the first Negro sheriff in the nation. At present, there are no other candidates for the office entered in the November election. “Federal marshals will have to be called in before it’s all over,” the deputy said. Many whites, and some Negroes, thought Amerson’s big-
gest threat would come from members of his own race. “The first time he goes into one of those nigger beer joints and tries to make an arrest, somebody is going to kill him,” said the white owner of a used car lot The short, muscular Amerson, who lacks only 30 semester hours of obtaining an electronics degree at Tuskegee Institute, said he did not anticipate any trouble. But he added: “I hope I won’t have to arrest anyone—it would make my job a whole lot easier.” Sadler said Amerson would "have to brace his back and face up to the job. “He’s now known too well
and he must gain the respect of the people,” said the outgoing sheriff, who was appointed to his post two years ago by Gov. George Wallace, an ardent segregationist
GETS REVENGE LONDON UPI — Joseph Mourat became riled at the sight of an abandoned car left undisturbed outside of his house for six months. He retaliated Wednesday, towing the vehicle to the steps of the office of Transport Minister Mrs. Barbara Castle. He painted a message on the vehicle: “Dear Mrs. Castle, this wreck has been outside my house. Now you have it outside yours. Compliments from Joseph Mourat.”
