news of Hollywood By VERNON SCOTT HOLLYWOOD UPI — Dean Martin may be irreplaceable to the nation’s distillers, but starting next month Dino will begin his summer television hiatus, leaving NBC with a dry spot on Thursday nights. Filling in as hosts during the abstemious 12 weeks are a pair of exceedingly funny comedians, Dan Rowan and Dick Martin. Rowan and Martin, partners for 14 years, have been guests on Martin’s melange of songs, gags and tomfoolery in the past and count the Italian crooner as a buddy. “You don’t try to follow an act like Dean’s,” said Rowan, the handsome, sophisticated straight man of the act. “What we've got is a resident variety company,” Martin added. “Every week we’ll be introducing Lainie Kazan, Dom De Luise, Frankie Randall, Lisa D’Oreo and Judi Rolin.” “But we’U have some surprises, too,” Rowan said. “We’ve already taped all the shows, and each one includes some improvisational comedy. “The format is a late night talk show. I play the moderator with guest stars answering ad lib questions from the cast. It’ dangerous sometimes because nothing is rehearsed. But it can be very exciting, too.” Among the guests on the hot spot are Tom Smothers, Barbara McNair, Jackie Vernon, Pat Harrington and Phyllis Diller. The prospect of their own series has Rowan and Martin ecstatic. "Television is the logical step forward for nightclub comedians,” said Rowan. "But movies are even more desirable, and that’s where we’d like to work.” Why not. The guy they’re replacing is quadruple-threat-man. Martin stars in clubs, his own television show, movies and on records. He’s as much comedian as singer and continues to gain stature with the years.

Rowan and Martin are on the threshold of becoming the first sophisticated, not-pratfall, nonslapstick comedy team to make the bigtime in the past couple of decades. Television can use them.
