Brilliant Defense Lives On In Memory By Alfred Sheinwold The late Edward Frischauer, one of the greatest card players in the history of the game, would have won everything in sight if he had been a disciplined bidder. Today's hand, one of his defensive gems, was played in Los Angeles Bridge Week a few years ago. in dummy with the five of hearts. Declarer discarded his remaining spades on the king and jack of clubs and then led the queen of hearts from the dummy. Frischauer naturally played . . . well the “normal” play is a low heart. West wins with the ace of hearts and leads a third round of spades. South ruffs in his hand and leads a trump, losing the jack to East’s king. What can East do? No matter what Blast returns, declarer draws the last trump and runs the good diamonds to take the rest of the tricks. FIRST TIME It’s easy to see the right play now. We’re looking at all four hands and have already seen how the “normal” defense goes wrong. Frischauer got it right the first time, looking only at his own hand and the dummy. When the queen of hearts was led from dummy, Frischauer stepped up with the king of hearts and led his last spade. South ruffed in his own hand and led another trump. Now West took the ace of hearts and led a fourth spade. If dummy ruffed. East’s nine would become the master trump. If dummy failed to ruff, East would ruff with the nine and thus take the setting trick at once. DAILY QUESTION As dealer, you hold: S-None; H-Q J 10 5; D-A K J 8; C-K J 9 8 4. What do yau say? In The Temporary Field
ZURICH, Switzerland UPI— An unfrocked Roman Catholic priest who once sold tickets for a ride on “Noah’s Ark” was arrested in connection with the death of a 16-year-old girl whom police said was beaten with whips, sticks, plastic bats and other torture instruments. Joseph Stocker, a 59-year-old excommunicated priest and leader of a champagne-drinking religious cult was accused by police of administering a beating to “drive the devil” from Bernadette Hasler, the daughter of Swiss members of the sect Six other sect members were charged with taking part in the “exorcism.” The girl’s bruised and battered body was discovered Monday in a house at the village of Wagen. It carried marks of whippings and beatings with blunt instruments that led to severe internal bleeding and may have been the cause of
death.
Promises Soviet Aid To Hanoi
MOSCOW UPI —Communist party leader Leonid I. Brezhnev promised “very tangible manifestations” of increased Soviet bloc aid to Hanoi if the United States further escalates the Vietnamese war. “The Soviet Union firmly supports and will go on supporting the just cause of Viet Nam,” Brezhnev said in a speech in the Soviet city of Vladivostok. The 59-year-old Kremlin leader went there for ceremonies awarding the order of Lenin, Russia’s top honor, to the maritime territory of far eastern Russia for “successes in developing the national economy.”
By ROBERTA ROESCH If you would like to extend your income over and above your take-home pay and beyond your husband’s earnings, one opportunity to investigate is a job assignment at night in the temporary employment field. This chance to work is yours for the asking if you need to balance the budget, because, within the past few years, growing numbers of major companies have been requesting crews of temporary workers for night work. As a rule the jobs begin anywhere from 4:30 to 6:00 p. m. and end from 8:00 p. m. to midnight. Suited To The Time ‘Many companies have found that evening hours are ideal for the processing of particular kinds of data, for projects that can be worked on equipment put to other use during the day, and to get the maximum ‘mileage’ out of expensive computers,” explained Sabatino A. Russo, president of one of the temporary agencies now offering assignments at night. “Housewives with husbands who can mind the children in the evening are finding this work ideal,” said Russo. “But so are many other people who need to supplement their income or to achieve an economic goal. Trained Her Children “We have placed one mother of 12 children who has trained her youngsters to take over at home when she has a job. We also have several housewives who like evening assignments because their husbands work nights. "Many of the women take on jobs four or five hours a night to pay off an indebtedness or upgrade the family’s living.” Others seeking night work

Many of the assignments last for a longer time than temporary employment during the day, and working crews usually include 25 to 30 people. All jobs are well protected, though, since men and guards always complement the women in the crew.
Two Charged In Credit Card Deal MUNCIE, UPI — Two persons accused of using stolen credit cards In at least four states in collusion with a number of filing station owners are under arrest, Police said Floyd Stephens, 35, Muncie, was arrested in Detroit and waived extradition, and Clayta F. Beatty, 28, who surrendered to detective chief David Thomas, was arraigned in City Court on preliminary charges of felony, forgery illegal use of credit cards. The woman’s bond was set at $5,500. Miss Beatty was arrested originally last July and implicated Stephens, authorities said. Both escaped. Authorities said the couple allegedly worked their scheme in Michigan, Kentucky and Tennessee besides Indiana—and perhaps in several other states. Authorities said the scheme worked this way: Filling station owners, instead of returning credit cards to their owners following a purchase, would instead turn them over to Stephens and the woman whenever a customer neglected to ask for his card back and that the two would then make large purchases with the credit cards, sell the items and split the profits with the service station owners. With one company alone, the purchases totaled more than $25,000 police said.
Man III After Tampered Drink VALPARAISO, Ind. UPI — Authorities tried to link the drugging Thursday of a mixed drink with another in March which killed a man. They said the case of Stephen Toth of Liberty Twp. was similar in almost every detail to the death March 5 of James Price, Hobart, who was dead on arrival at Porter Memorial Hospital after becoming unconscious at the Portage Moose Lodge where he had been drinking. Toth collapsed in the Alibi Inn early Thursday while drink ing in the company of his wife. He was rushed to the hospital where attendants said it appeared he was drugged. Doctors pumped out Toth’s stomach and his condition was described as good. His wife, Dorothy, told authorities an at-
