Senators Hear Space Director WASHINGTON UPI— Spare Agency director James E. Webb Thursday tried to ward off congressional cuts in President Johnson’s $5 billion space budget. He said the United States i. lagging two years behind the Russians in space power. Webb, head of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, appeared before a Senate appropriations subcommittee to defend the administration’s fund requests for the fiscal year beginning July 1. He told the senators the United States would not be able to catch up to the Russians during the new fiscal year and that any major setback to the U.S. Apollo program could jeopardize attempts to put American astronauts on the moon by 1969. Vandals Deface Lincoln Statue ODON UPI—Authorities investigated the defacement of a statue in Odon City Park in which vandals painted a yellow stripe down the back of Abraham Lincoln. An expert who examined the vandalism said it will cost several hundred dollars to restore the full-length statue and even then the paint cannot be completely removed from the porous limestone. The statue was presented to this small Daviess County town in 1922 by Ira Correll, a native of Odon who became well known nationally as a sculptor. It is considered one of the best Lincoln replicas in existence. The statue, about 10 feet tall from base to head, shows Lincoln standing with his hand on a Bible atop a tree stump. State's Masons Install Officers INDIANAPOLIS UPI— The Indiana Masonic Grand Lodge ended its 149th annual meeting by installing Joseph L. Bridwell, Franklin, as grand master. John L. Bloxsome, Terre Haute, was chosen deputy grand master, and other grand officers elected were Dr. Robert M. Seibel, Nashville, senior warden; Robert P. Joyce, Indianapolis, Junior warden; John H. Jefferson, Indianapolis treasurer, and Dwight L. Smith, Franklin, secretary. Jefferson and Smith were reelected. Bridwell appointed Richard E. Hickman, Bloomington, senier deacon; Charles R. Brown, Montezuma, junior deacon; Rev. James H. Ellerbrook, Franklin, chaplain; Howard O. Hunter, Indianapolis, lecturer; John H. Jena, South Bend, marshal, and Fritz M. Ehling, Indianapolis, steward and tyler. Klan Files Suit In Federal Court INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The Ku Klux Klan has filed a suit in Federal Court here asking that law enforcement officials be enjoined from interfering with their right to hold meetings in Indiana. The suit was based on a restraining order issued in Dearborn County last fall which prevented the Klan from having a scheduled rally on a farm near Dillsboro. Parkie Scott, an Ohio organizer for the KKK, who announced the Dillsboro rally last November but was stopped by a Dearborn Circuit Court order issued on request of Prosecutor Harry L. Zerbe, was one of the plaintiffs in the federal suit. Another plaintiff was James R. Venable, identified as imperial wizard of the KKK front Stone Mountain, Ga. Defendants were Zerbe, Hancock County Prosecutor James L. Brand of Greenfield; St. Joseph County Prosecutor Thomas J. Roemer, and Indiana Atty. Gen. John J. Dillon. Brand was involved in the prosecution of Klan figures at Greenfield last year in connection with distribution of antiNegro literature in postoffice boxes.
