Hollywood By Vernon Scott HOLLYWOOD UPI— They’re going to film “Doctor DooUtUe” without Rex Harrison’s basset hound, Homer, despite the Oscar winner’s pleas. Harrison will star with some 400 animals in the musical version of the famed story, working with such exotic fauna as lions, tigers, elephants, xebras, giraffes and hippopotami, a prospect he relishes not at all. Additionally he will be surrounded by such personal pets as Chi Chi the chimp, Dab Dab the duck, Gub Gub the pig and Gyp the dog. To Harrison’s dismay, Gyp will be portrayed by a mongrel who has picked up a few tricks necessary for the role. The elegant Englishman tried to railroad his dog, Homer, into the part. It’s not that Rex needs the added income. Homer would, in fact, work for free. But the fates ruled otherwise. Homer was gyped out of the opportunity. “Part of the picture will be made in England, you see,” Harrison explained. “And the law there requires visiting dogs to spend six months in quarantine. So I can’t take Homer with me.” “However, working dogs are allowed in without the quarantine. And that’s precisely why I thought Homer should play Gyp. “I’m not really an animal fancier, but Homer is a very special dog. I bought him in the San Fernando valley three years ago when we were making “My Fair Lady.’ He is an enormously personable dog with great expressive eyes.” At the moment, Homer is ensconsed at the Harrison home in Portofino, Italy. He failed to make the trip to Hollywood by plane with his master because he is afraid of heights. For that reason the Harrisons travel by boat most of the time with Homer tagging along. “Homer loves Portofino. He’s made many friends there and has converted the two small butcher shops into his private clubs. He hangs around them picking up scraps whenever he can,” Harrison said. “As pets go, Homer is quite the best of the lot and I’m not at all sure he would have been able to handle stardom. It goes to some creatures’ heads, you know.”

BUSINESS HIGHLIGHTS CLEVELAND — In spite of lagging steel output so far this year, chairman Roger Slough predicted at U. S. Steel Corp.'s

annual meeting that consumption for all of 1966 will reach a record 97-98 million tons compared with 93 million last year. He also predicted a more favorable climate for raising steel prices.

DETROIT — The big three auto companies plan to build 838,000 cars in May, just about equal to last year’s record output. These schedules are being maintained even though sales cure running well behind last year.

WASHINGTON UPI — The Commerce Department says new factory orders climbed three per cent in March from the February level to a new high. New orders and the backlog of unfilled orders also climbed sharply.

NEW YORK — The plan of Metro-Goldwyn - Mayer’s management to increase authorized stock to eight million shares as a maneuver in the battle with dissident director Philip Levin has run into new opposition. Puritan Fund, Inc., a mutual group that owns eight per cent of MGM, charged the management proposal might dilute its equity.
