f.tf. Audiences Hear Communist BLOOMINGTON UPI — A Communist theoretician, hanged in effigy by demonstrators, spoke to standing-room-only crowds at Indiana University Tuesday afternoon and night while a small group protested his appearance on the campus. The I.U. trustees had refused to ban the speeches by Herbert Aptheker on the grounds that such action would make a “martyr" of him. About 50 students, outnumbered by police wearing riot helmets and carrying clubs, demonstrated peacefully against Aptheker’s appearance and hanged him in effigy from a tree, but there was no sign of non-student groups who had been reported planning a major demonstration against him. Police checked identification cards at the entrance to the auditorium where Aptheker spoke during the afternoon and again Tuesday night and only students and members of the university faculty and staff were admitted.

Rearson Backed By Canadians OTTAWA UPI—Parliament refused Tuesday night to topple the government of Nobel prize winner Lester B. Pearson because of his probe of a sex and security scandal involving his political rivals. Amid charges of “lies” and “political assassination,” Pearson received a 133-106 margin on a no-confidence vote spurred by his pursuit of an inquiry into Canada’s “little Profumo scandal.” Pearson’s predecessor as prime minister, John Diefenbaker, led the spicy parliamentary debate forcing the vote on a motion which, if adopted, would have required new national elections. The vote evolved on a question of whether Pearson abused the office of prime minister in launching an investigation of charges that Diefenbaker cabinet officials compromised security for the sake of sex with

It carried funds for three controversial projects opposed by Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara. Chairman L. Mendel Rivers, D-S.C., told newsmen the committee added about $900 million to the $17 billion requested by the administration. Included in the bill — which already has been passed by the Senate — was authorization to begin positioning a Nike-X antimissile system around the country. There also were funds for construction of an unrequested nuclear frigate and for stepped up research on a future manned bomber. McNamara has told Congress
