Activity Expected to Pick up at Speedway
INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Activity waa expected^ to pick up at the Speedway today with more cars approved for practice for the May 30 500-mile race and the possibility that the 150 mile per hour speed limit might be lifted. Chief Steward Harlan Fengler said he would inspect the track today before deciding whether to lift the limit or keep
it in force for a bit longer. The limit, imposed as a safety precaution, has been in effect since the track opened for practice last Saturday. Joey Leonard, San Jose, Calif., got over the limit Monday during a practice run in his rearengine, Ford-powered car. He was clocked at an unofficial 151.2 mph and drew an admonition from Fengler but no fine.

Carl Williams, Kansas City, Mo., hit an unofficial 150.050 after completing his refresher test. Mike McGreevy, Fresno, Calif., last year’s USAC national midget champ, also passed his refresher test during the day. Art Pollard, Medford, Ore., became the first rookie tc pass his driver test and was eagerly awaiting the lifting of the speed limit. He was approved by a jury of fellow drivers and USAC officials after completing the 145 mph phase of the 100-mile test run. He said he had no problems in his rear-engine car powered by a conventional four-cylinder Offenhauser engine "but now Fm shooting for higher speeds as soon as they take the 150 mph ceiling off.’’ Jackie Stewart, Dunbarton, Scotland, a European grand prix veteran, missed his chance to get out of the rookie classification when engine trouble put his car on the sidelines. The trouble developed in the rearengine Lola-Ford just as he was beginning the final phase of the test. A total of eight cars, the most so far, practiced on the 2 la-mile oval Monday.

Coach Resigns At Garrett
GARRETT, Ind. UPI —Ward Smith, who coached Garrett to a perfect regular season Indiana high school basketball record, resigned Monday after 13 seasons at the helm of the Railroaders. Smith, who gave no reason for the resignation, said he would remain at the school as a teacher. He said he also will continue to operate a cummer basketball camp with Brandi McCracken, former head coach at Indiana University. Smith’s Railroaders, led by 7foot Chuck Bavis, carried the only perfect record into tins year’s state championship tourney. The team won 24 straight before it was knocked off in the finals of the Fort Wayne regional tourney. Over 13 seasons, Smith’s Garrett teams won 260 games and lost 60. •
INDIANAPOLIS UPI —Don j Vandrey, a crew-cut kid with a burning ambition to become an Olympic runner, is the latest hope to become Indiana’s first 4-minute miler. He has another season to fulfil that ambition as a schoolboy, and he is Confident he can break the magic barrier before leaving Valparaiso High School. So is his coach, Evar Edquist. Just last week, Vandrey lowered the all-time Indiana high school record for the mile to 4:14.8, shaving one-tenth of a second off the mark set by Mark Gibbens of West Lafayette in last May’s state meet. He did it in the Northwestern Conference meet at Gary—right on schedule. "We sort of planned it that way,” said Edquist, “because Gilroy Field in Gary has a real fine track, one cf the finest around here, and the only thing we worried about was the wind. But that was no serious problem.” Vandrey took the lead from the start and was never pushed. He ran the first 440 in 61 seconds, then pulled away from the field. He led the pack by about 60 yards crossing the finish line. "If conditions are ideal, I think Don could run a 4:10 this season and he believes he can break the 4-minute barrier before leaving high school,” said Edquist. "I do, too; in fact, he may even get below 4:10 this year.”

Philly Wank NBA Championship
PHILADELPHIA UPI — Irv Kosloff, owner of the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team, had only one thought in mind when he hired Alex Hannum as his new head coach—“to bring the NBA championship to this city.” "In order to achieve that objective,” Kosloff explained, “it seemed to be there was only one man for the job—Alex Hannum.”
