West leads the Mug of epadee and continue! with the jack. South Akould expect Weat to have at least five epadee for hie overcaU, which means that East has at moat three apades. The situation is made to order for a hoM-up. South executes the hold-up by discarding a diamond instead of ruffing tha second spade. West leads another spade, and South ruffe Declarer thus takes his spade trick (In a masher of speaking) at a time when Bast plays his last spade. DRAWS TRUMPS South draws trumps, noticing that he has to use up aR of his own trumps to do so. Declarer next tries the diamond finesse, losing to the king. Thanks to South's precaution. East is unable to return a spade. East must return a club or a diamond, and in either case South easily takes the rest of the tricks, making his game contract. South goes down if ha ruffs the second spade. He can draw trumps and try the diamond finesse, but then East can lead another spade. South Is out of trumps, and West defeats the contract with the rest of Ids spades. DAILY QUESTION Partner bids one club, and tha next player passes. You hold: C-7 3 2; H-8 5; D-K 10 7; C-10 9 6 3 2. What do you say? Answer: Pass. Despite your length in clubs the hand is almost worthless. The best thing to do with a worthless hand is to pass at your first opportunity.
Drinking Helps CINCINNATI UPI _ Noel W. Tucker, 45, arrested for drunkenness, told the judge he had trouble breathing nwH “drinking helps me breathe." Judge William S. Mathews released him with advice to “find another physician who’ll
give you a different prescription.” The judge added, “Don’t come back, or you’ll have difficulty breathing for 30 days.”
U5. Jet Crashes HIROSHIMA UPI—A U. S. Marine F4B Phantom jet crashed into the Japan inland sea south of Hiroshima Wednesday, Japanese and U. S. military authorities said. Both crewmen parachuted to safety. The men were tentatively identified as Capt. H. F. Stroman, 32, of Florence, 3. C., and 1st LL R. L, Robinson, 27, of Santa Ana, Calif. Both men were picked up by Japanese vessels in the vicinity of the crash. A report said Robinson received “slight" injuries.
Too Much Wine PALERMO, Sicily UPI—Sicilian Francisco Cangemi rushed into the police station with tears in his eyes and cried out: “I shot and killed my wife. I fired three shots. She was five months pregnant and our four children now are orphans.” Police went to his home and found Mrs. Cangemi unharmed. She told police her husband had drunk too much wine. All he did, she said, was point his finger at her and shout: "Bang, bang, bang.” He apparently convinced himself that he had done the real thing.
