nificent in the playoff—but he had reservations on his skill. “I need a lot of practice with my irons. I’m satisfied with my woods and my putter worked better here than it has been,” Palmer said modestly. But his five birdies that gave him first money of $20,000 on the chilly, wind-swept Desert Ttiti Country Club course belied his words. And Brewer who took second money of $12,000 had praised Palmer’s catchup Sunday round as “the finest I’ve ever seen Amie play. Brewer had to race for a plane to {day hi the $85,000 Dallas Open and couldn’t pause to comment on the playoff round. i It was the Texas-based Brewer’s second playoff loss in a row. He had lost to Jack Nicklaus a week earlier for the Masters crown at Augusta and by now was used to the bitter taste of frustration.

The Pirates gave their senior circuit express a king-size push upMll in the seventh inning by executing the season’s first triple play. Tommy Harper and Pete Rose greeted Bob Purkey with lead-off back-to-back sin-

gles.

But Vada Pinson struck out on a 3-2 pitch and Jesse Gonder, subbing behind the plate for Pagliaroni, fired to third base as Rose and Harper attempted to stage their second double steal of the game. Bob Bailey chased Harper back to second, flipping the ball to Bill Mazeroski, who made the put out. Rose, seeing Harper race back to second, attempted to return to first base but was tagged out by Donn Clendenon. Rookie Don Sutton posted his first major league triumph in leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-3 victory and spoiling Houston’s home opener. The only other major league game scheduled — between Atlanta and Philadelphia — was postponed because of rain.

Golf Team Loses The Greencastle High School golf team met defeat at the hands of Terre Haute Wiley by a score of 13%-7%. Highlighting the meet was the battle between two of the conference’s top golfers, Wiley’s Bill Gilmore and Greencastle’s Mike Troyer. Gilmore came out on top in this meeting by shooting a 77 to Troyer’s 80. However, both had to take a back seat to Greencastle’s outstanding sophomore, Rob Lyon. Lyon shot a 37-38, 75 over the local course. This 75, matching a 75 shot by Troyer in 1965, ties the best round shot by Greencastle High School’s golfers in recent years.

Randy Lyon, Dan

Schauwecker, Rob Mont, Clark Fink-
