Primary May 3

Now is the time far all good men to come to the aid of their party. (We used to type this over and over in typing class.) It is the time! May 3rd. Indiana has a dosed primary which means you must declare your party preference and take a party ballot. The fall slate will contain only as good a candidate as you help nominate for your party May 3rd.

Character, personality, ability, and issues are always involved from the least elective office tc the highest The Seventh District Congressional race is perhaps the most crucial and exciting. This is a new district The Republicans claim it is a gerrymander district formed by the Democratic controlled General Assembly for party benefit. Though the Democrats would

Bke to deny this thsy have no intention of letting a Republican win in the Fall to disprove the charge. The Republicans have 6 hopefuls and the Democrats have 7. Monroe and Vigo Counties with heavily populated Bloomington and Terre Haute are the prime candidate target areas. Putnam with Greencastle ranks next. The remaining counties are small by population. Tour vote will be important, so take time to study these men and then vote. The Republicans have 3 running for Joint Stats Senator for Montgomery, Putnam, Parke and Fountain. None are local

m. Then the Dmoerats have a contest for Joint State Representative for Clay and Putnam. (We used to be with Owen.) The incumbent is a local man. Each voter has more opportunity to know the candidates for county and township offices. The offices of sheriff and commissioner of the 2nd district have proved very popular this year. Two from each party are running for sheriff. The Republicans have 2 candidates for commissioner and the Democrats have 7. A choice must be made and you, the voter, can make it. Each county is governed by a board of three county corn-

elected from separate commissioner districts, on the basis of the vote of the county as a whole. They are responsible for the administration of all county business and may enact ordinances to meet local conditions and exercise other authority vested in the board by legislature. They make many appointments and have one of their members on numerous boards by virtue of their office. They are very busy men and can be found in the Court House almost every day. You are most welcome to attend their meetings every Monday at 9 a.m. to learn more about their duties. The only true elections that

day are precinct committee ami and delegates to the State Conventions. It is interesting that the precinct committeeman is in office immediately after the votes are counted in his precinct and the election board inspector signs the form. On Saturday he and the vice he appoints attend the Central Committee Meeting established by State Law for his party and help elect the Central' Committee Chairman, Vice, Secretary and Treasurer. The efeffectiveness, philosophy, and patronage of your party depends on these people. The Greencastle League of Women Voters is again compiling information on the candi-

dates and their answers to provocative questions to be published. Be an informed voter!

No Yielding In First Discussions BONN UPI — France and West Germany showed no signs of yielding in their first round of discussions about the NATO crisis, but they have agreed to attempt new negotiations in about three weeks, informed sources said today. In day-long talks lasting through a working dinner Mon-

Gerhard Schroeder outlined to his French counterpart, Maurice Couve de Murville, the German government’s uncompromising attitude on the status of French troops in Germany after President Charles * da Gaulle’s NATO pullout. Schroeder told Couve de Murville that France must place its 75,000 forces in this country under German authority by July 1 or withdraw them. The July date coincides with De Gaulle’s timetable to pull France out of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization NATO.
