1A Classification Astros Win
Tha Dally Bannar, Graancastta, Indiana Friday, April 15, 1966
WASHINGTON UPI— Cassius Clay plans to appeal his 1A draft classification on the basis of "hardship,” it was learned Thursday through a Selective spokesman. The spokesman said if Clay does plan to file as a "hardship” case, his appeal won’t come to Washington unless a local appeal board hands down a divided decision. It is believed that Clay’s appeal has gone to toe Kentucky state director for transmission to the appeal board, but Louisville draft board officials have refused to confirm or deny toe report from the national Selective Service Bureau. Clay, though he has no children, can claim hardship on grounds that he is toe sole support of his family, which in this case includes his mother and father. He is also paying 31,250 a month alimony to his former wife, Sonji for the next 21 months.

From Dodgers By CURT BLOCK UPI Sports Writer ‘ The Houston Astros were supposed to be disposed of in the first two weeks of the season but first indications are that last year’s ninth place club is going to cause plenty of trouble. The National League sched-ule-makers handed freshman Manager Grady Hatton no mean assignment when they listed Houston’s first 13 games against the champion Dodgers and second place San Francisco Giants. The Astros, however, were not awed by Los Angeles’ high-
flying champion flag and treat* ed the Dodgers discourteously for the second time in three days Thursday night, coming from behind to win 4-2. In the only other National League activity, Chicago beat San Francisco 9-4 and Philadelphia edged St. Louis 5-4. Detroit swept a twinbill from New York 3-2 and 5-2, Minnesota topped Kansas City 4-2 and California nipped Chicago 2-1 in the American League’s only action. Outfielder Rusty Staub was the culprit for the second consecutive night as he blasted an eighth inning, two run homer off reliever Ron Perranoski to snap a 2-2 tie. The cloud spoiled the major league debut of 21-year-old Don Sutton who left the game with the seme tied.
