The IHSAA reported scrimmages in the Lebanon High School gymnasium April 1 and 2. It said “some Purdue freshmen players” took part in the first scrimmage and that “two j | Purdue basketball coaches” brought Bavis and Parry Wallace of Nashville, Tenn., to Lebanon April 2 to visit Mount and “while there another scrim-

“Upon hearing of these scrimmage games, the school authorities of each boy involved requested the Board of Control to determine the athletic eligibility of the participant^” IHSAA Commissioner Phil Eskew said. Eskew cited a rule saying a “scrimmage or practice by students with or against teams or players not belonging to their school is considered a game.” “The Board feels it is unfortunate when over-zealous college recruiting methods cause boys to lose their eligibility,”

Eskew said.

Trippett had played golf, Bavis and Noland participated in track, Barrett in tennis and Ott in baseball.

Pahner won it in 1962 and last year while Nicklaus, fresh from winning the Masters at Augusta for the second year in a row, was the T. of C. cham-

pion in 1963-64.

But the field this year is one of the strongest in a decade with such stars as Gary Player, Doug Sanders, Gay Brewer, Tony Lema and Billy Casper. In fact, nine of the 11 leading money winners of 1966 were in

the starting field.

The 72-hole tournament is played over the par 72, 7,209yard Desert Inn Country Club course which is the kind of a layout that favors long hitters such as Palmer and Nicklaus. But Player can’t be ruled out even though in three tournaments so far this year he has been something less than a standout. In a practice round Wednesday, the little South African carded a solid four-under-

par 68.

Indiana Begins Football Practice BLOOMINGTON UPI—After three days of being stymied by the weather, Indiana's football Hoosiers opened spring drills today — regardless of conditions. A mixture of rain and snow and more rain put the timetable of coach Johnny Pont well behind schedule, but he said practice would begin today—rain or shine. Meanwhile, Pont pointed with pride at the recruiting efforts of his staff, which yielded acceptance by 26 prospects in an initial mailing of 27 Big Ten tenders. That should give IU a “very good freshman group," Pont said.
