'Creative Work' Created In Doing Everyday Job
The Doily Benner, Oraencostle, fndleno S Thursday, April 14, 1066
By ROBERTA ROESCH Sometimes I think that the person who coined the phrase “creative work” ought to be tarred and feathered for all the seeds of discontent that term is planting every day in the minds of men and women, who think their jobs or daily routines aren’t creative enough. I hear their <hsconteht often
in steady streams of complaints from job-holders who say that they would do better if their jobs were more creative. -
{Secretary Who Sees Meaning In Project Makes It Creative.
From Housewtvee, Too And then I hear the same sad tales from many women at home who tell me their lives have no meaning because the things they do every day are routine instead of creative. Because I hear this so frequently, I have strong feelings about it. So I was particularly happy to read not very long ago that Dr. Michael Wyschogrod, an assistant professor of philosophy at City College in New York, had similar feelings about it. According to Dr. Wyschogrod, who spoke at a meeting of the American Association of Existential Psychology and Psychiatry in New York City, it is absurd for all of us to expect the economic order to supply not only material needs for people but also meaning for their lives. Not The Answer “We cannot pretend that dabbling with creativity is the solution to the problem of the housewife and salesman who find their lives empty,” Dr. Wyschogrod said.
“The person who attempts to create in order to find a meaning in his life, to convert a pointless existence into one that is no longer pointless is using creativity to his own end, and that cannot be done.” It can be done, I would like to add, because creativity at its best comes from people. It is not built into jobs. The secretary, for example, who organizes her boss’ boxes of clippings into notebooks in her spare time because she sees meaning in the project is being creative in her way—and making her work creative. Mean And Purpose Similarly, the woman at home who prepares and serves a good evening meal because she sees meaning and purpose in a family gathered together at night is being creative in her way—and making her work creative. Real Creativity — file kind that has some meaning—cpmes from the spark within you that makes you * work hard to improve the job that needs to bs done at the moment.
