Three defending champs are back to shoot for titles in the field events. BaB State’s Kurt Behoret won the shot put last year in 51-1%; Dick Forrert of HMnois State took the pole vault in 13-5 and Forrest’s teammate, PfaM Johnson, captured the triple Jump in 41-5 % and the broad jump in 21-6. Forrest’s pole vault claim wM be highly tenuous this time, however. Mike Hanna, Indiana State vauiter who dtyd not compete in the meet last year, has topped 15-feet several tunes, in-

Salomon, 55-year-old insurance executive, bad purchased the St, Louis Arena for 94 nafflioB subject to winning the franchise and said that the team *had to be called the Blues.” Robinson Team Sparks Baltimore By JOE GERGEN UPI Sports Writer The investment firm of Robinson end Robinson already has declared a first dividend in Baltimore's American League pennant stock. Frank, the junior partner, joined Brooks On the Orioles’ roster this season after 10 years with the Cincinnati Reds and the pair immediately laid claim to the title as the moat fearsome batting combination in the A. L. They substantiated that oiaizn Tuesday in their opening game of the season against the Boston Red Sox. B. Robinson homered, hit safely three times and drove in tteee runs and F. Robinson homered, added two hits and drovs in one to lead the Birds to-a 5-4, 13-inning victory over the Sox. Brooks began the Robinson assault in the very first hming when ha crashed a home run off Boston starter Earl Wilson with Frank aboard. Frank drove one out in the fifth after the Bosox had taken a 4-3 lead. Brooks sent the game overtime with a bases-loaded, two-out single in the Boston reliever Jim Lonbocy was directly responsible for the winning run as ha >»Ur»a across Bob Johnson with two cut in the 13th. Stu Maker, the peerless Baltimore relief specialist, blanked the Red Sox on one hit over the last four innings to gain credit for the victory.
Rain Hinders DePauw Sports Rain continues to play havoc with sports activity for DePauw University’s spring athletes. Lost to the weather were yesterday’s baseball game with Purdue at Lafayette, a triangular golf match at Windy Hill with Rose Poly and Butler, and a tennis match at Indiana University. The baseball game has been rescheduled for May 8, but the golf engagement has been cancelled. The tennis squads may get together tomorrow. Weekend activity, weather permitting, has DePauw at home in baseball (a 1 p. m. doubleheader with Ball State), golf (a triangular with Indiana State, St. Joe and Bah State), and track (the 14-team DePauw invitational.) The tennis squad win be idle until hooting Evansville, April 22.

chiding a 15-1 jump last year that created the present Blackstock record. One of two multiple-winners last spring, Johnson also took the 120 high hurdles a year back. By repeating his best time of the current campaign— :14.6—he could tie the stadium record. The other double winner is Wheaton’s Steve Selins. He will he around again to defend titles in the mile run (4:30.5) and the two mite (9:53.9). With good weather almost 25 per cent of DePauw’s stadium records could fall to the classy collegiate field. Most likely candidate to be obliterated in the 880-yard run mark where Ken Sparks, Ball State; Steve Norris, DePauw; and Doug Conquest and Tom Judd of Purdue have stepped it off between 1:54 and 1:58. The record is 1:55.6. Ban State’s Fred Gamble is just a half-inch off the 6-7% high jump mark, and Hanna and Johnson, of course, have either equalled or surpassed the existing standards for the pole vault and 120 high hurdles. Though it’s unlikely they’ll produce a field record, Butler’s Jim Petty and Arnold Giles of Illinois State already have 23 feet plus leaps in the broad jump. DePauw track coach and meet director Bob Harvey said the invitational event will be held as scheduled regardless of the weather.

Braves Lose Season Opener
By United Press International Poetic justice is a myth. If such a thing existed, it would surely have ended the tale of the gypsy Braves with an opening day victory in Atlanta. But a 13 inning, iron man stint by righthander Tony Cloninger, a two home run performance by catcher Joe Torre and a record crowd of 50,671 did not faze the Pittsburg Pirates who scored a 3-2 victory on Willie Stargell’s two-run homer in the top of the 13th Tuesday night to spoil Atlanta’s major league debut. In other National League action, the world champion Los Angeles Dodgers squeezed past Houston 3-2 and San Francisco ruined Leo Durocher’s return to big league managing with a 9-1 drubbing of the Chicago Cubs. Philadelphia was rained out at St. Louis and the New York Mets suffered a similar fate at Cincinnati. Baltimore nipped Boston 5-4 in 13 innings; Detroit beat New York 2-1; Chicago edged California 3-2 and Minnesota topped Kansas City 2-1 in the only American League games. Cleveland and Washington were idle after opening the 1966 season Monday.

Stein, Orinda, Calif., entered the car and said it will be powered by two sixcylinder, Porsche engines with a combined displacement of 253 cubic inches. Cheesebourg will be after his eighth “500” start. His best finish was 10th as a rookie in 1958 in a Novi.
LUCKY JACK AUGUSTA, Ga. UPI—Jack Nicklaus, the first golfer to win back-to-back Masters’ titles, saying he was lucky to make the playoff: “This was the type of tournament that no one really won . . . it was one that a lot of fellows lost.”
Runs 2-Mile Race In 9:19.5 GARY UPI—Gary Wirt sophomore Jim Eastlund turned in a season’s best 9:19.5 clocking for the 2-mile run here Tuesday, bettering the previous season’s best showing of 9:56.3 by Vem Jolgren of Elkhart. The best 2-mile run of the outdoor season came on the Gary Mann track, where Wirt met Highland because construction of a new Wirt facility has not been completed. The event Is new for Hoosier prep athletes this year. Eastlund previously ran a 4:18 mile over an indoor track this season.
