National Window - Opinion
By Lyfe Wilson ty United Press International Evidence accumulates that overwhelming events are beginning to overtake the Great Society. This evidence does not mean a Republican takeover this year or in 1968. Events began to overtake the Republican party a generation ago and by now have just about overwhelmed the GOP. The Republican party began to slip when It started substituting expediency for principle and became a party without acknowledged standards or spokesmen. The Great Society is suffering now from a distortion of image. A year ago Lyndon B. Johnson was Indisputably the headman, the boss of people and events. He might almost have spoken these 18th Century lines: ‘T am monarch of all I survey, *‘My right there is none to dispute.” No more! Back on the banks of the Pedernalea such lines might still apply. But not much beyond those rolling ranch acres. In foreign policy LBJ is trapped in a nasty little war from which he seeks vainly to escape. He cannot do so, however, except on terms which be politically unacceptable. Escalation is what hexes LBJ and his Great Society. The war in Southeast Asia has escalated beyond anything ever dreamed of when candidate Johnson was assailing Barry Goldwater in 1964 as a trigger-happy fool. More Johnson escalation seems now to be in the works, because LBJ will be under enormous campaign year pressure and thereafter to get on with the war—win it. Viet Nam is the running Asiatic sore infecting the Great Society. The ballyhooed SEATO has proved to be a spider web alliance in Asia, possibly less than no alliance at all. On the Atlantic front, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is beginning to crumble. The idea of an effective NATO without France is about as solid as would be a football team with open spaces from tackle to tackle. Perhaps the Communist threat to Western Europe Is diminishing. If so, it comes at an urgent moment for the West. NATO is likely to become a foam rubber crutch. Escalation is not limited to war. The cost of living goes ever higher. Call it inflation or call it something else, the Great Society has not coped with the problem so far and is about to take off in a new direction. The administration recently was

concerned with tax reduction, then with increases and at one stage was shooting at tax hikes in one area (Social Security) and tax reductions in others. The new direction is toward a tax hike. Maybe. Here , is an image of a President entrapped in escalating war abroad and higher costa of living at home, a president whose two major alliance structures, SEATO and NATO, are ailing. This is not the Image of a President who a year ago might have said: ‘T am monarch of all I survey.” Even Congress is beginning to arch its back and snort a little defiance. Coming up are the off-year congressional elections in which it is possible but not probable that LBJ will be compelled to pay a big price In prestige and congressional strength. All of this would add up to deadly trouble for President Johnson if he had any first class and consistent opposition. The Republican party is unable to offer that kind of opposition except occasionally on narrow fronts. The GOP desperately needs an inspiring leader. Else it will remain what it became about 30 years ago, a feeble, me-too copy of the various deals, horizons and societies.
Y.P. Throws First Pitch Hubert H. Humphrey, the season’s first relief pitcher, started the 1966 baseball campaign on its long, sometimes bumpy, often dramatic road through the hot summer months when he tossed out the first ball today prior to the opening game between Washington and Cleveland. The job of tossing out the ceremonial first pitch traditionally falls to the President, but the Chief Executive announced over the weekend that he would not attend this year’s opener at D. C. Stadium. This left the task to Vice President Humphrey, a one-time high school second baseman in Doland, S. D:
