Ride Mount Is Indiana’s 1966 Mr. BasketbalL'* IMs probably comss as a surprise to nobody. Lebanon’s super-star will wear the No. 1 white and blue uniform when the Indiana All-Stars meet Kentucky's finest in Hinkle Fleldhouse at Indianapolis and In the first game of the series on June 18 in Freedom Hall at Louisville. Mount was the overwhelming choice of the more than 130 Indiana sportswriters and radio and teleTision broadcasters whose votes determine the makeup of the Indiana All-Star

This year’s Hoosier team is expected to be one of the most talented in the history of the All-Star Game which was started by The Indianapolis Star In 1939. Four more graduating high school seniors who will round out the first five on this year’s squad will be announced next Sunday, and the remaining All-Stars will be announced the following week. Cleon Reynolds, coach at Marian College in Indianapolis, has been named coach of the 1966 Indiana All-Stars. He succeeds Angus Nicoson of Indiana Central College whq has handled

the All-Star team each year since 1952. Nicoson was forced to give up the post because it would conflict in June with his new duties as president of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Over the years, the IndianaKentucky All-Star game has netted more than 3250,000 which has been used to aid Indiana’s blind through The Star’s Fund for the Blind. The selection of Mount as “Mr. Basketball” climaxes a career unequaled in Indiana high school history. He has been picked as an All-American for the last three years, and during the past year he was the most publicized high school star in the country. The 6-3 guard broke all scoring records with a total of 2,595 points during his four years on the Lebanon High School varsity, an average of 27.3 a game. He averaged 20.4 as a freshman, 23.3 as a sophomore, and 33.1 as a junior and a senior. Mount was never held to less than jl points in a game, and this happened just once as a freshman and once as a sophomore. His biggest point production was 57 this past season against Crawfordsville. The slender marksman scored over 40 points eight times and over 30 points 28 times. In answer to any critic who might say he shot too much, it should be pointed out that Mount hit 48.8 per cent of his

attempts from the field over his four-year career. His fouryear average at the free throw line was 80.8 per cent. During the past season, he also averaged nearly seven assists and 10 rebounds a game. In the fourth game of his junior year, Rick Mount broke the Lebanon school record of 1,127 set in 1941-44 by his father, Pete Mount. Early the past season he surpassed Oscar Robertson’s high school total of 1,780 points. Mount has been interested in basketball since he was three years old. This interest has left little time for other sports — the only other ones in which he took part were Little League baseball and freshman football. His success has been due to constant practice and complete concentration on basketball as well as his natural ability. Other than basketball, his hobbies are hunting and fishing. His school activities include Spanish Club, Hi-Y and Lebanon’s “L” Club. When his playing days are over, he would like to teach history and coach basketball. Mount is the first player from Lebanon to make the Indiana All-Stars. The year his father was graduated was one of the two years during World War n when the All-Star game was not held.

INDIANAPOLIS UPI— Two more entries, both naming national driving champion Mario Andretti for the Indianapolis 500-mile race Memorial Day. So far 48 cars have been entered, and a late flurry of entries is expected before the deadline Friday midnight. A. E. Dean, Long Beach, Calif., entered the two cars for Andretti. Both are powered by Ford V-8 racing engines. One is a new Lotus and the other is the car in which he finished 3rd and was named rookie of the

year last year in the 500-mile classic. Andretti holds the unofficial record average speed of just over 164 miles per hour at the Indianapolis speedway. He set the mark during tire tests several months ago, but the only official speeds are those recorded during time trials and the race itself. Andretti, who lives in Nazareth, Pa., will again have Clint Brawner, Phoenix, Ariz., as chief mechanic.

Speedway officials said quite a bit of work under way this winter at the track is nearing completion, including the second of two new stands for spectators on the No. 1 turn. Work also is being done to the racing surface. Officials said the track took more punishment than normal from the weather this winter because of frequent changes in temperatures. The speedway ojtens for practice April 30.
