Union May Be Target For Suits WASHINGTON UPI— The -Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen BLFE has emerged from Its fourday strike against eight of the nation’s major railroads In almost exactly the same shape as when the walkout began. But In the process the union apparently has incurred President Johnson’s wrath, may have made Itself the target for coetly railroad damage suits and possibly may be out of pocket a total of $27,500 in contempt of court fines. Brotherhood President H. E. . Ed Gilbert claimed after the walkout was over that it had spurred time-consuming bargaining in the long-standing -dispute with the railroads over the firemen’s job on diesel locomotives in freight and yard service. But government officials say theirs Is little the Labor Department can do to compel the railroads to speed up negotiations on the complex problem. It's dear that the railroads are hoping for delay to thin further the ranks of the firemen. Nearly 20,000 firemen’s jobs have been abolished under the two-year federal arbitration award which expired March 30. And the union membership may shrink even further If federal courts rule that the railroads do not have to replace firemen who retire, die, or quit In the future. The Railway Labor Act, with tts maze of time-consuming mediation procedure, governs the bargaining on the railroads. Gilbert’s union has been trying to accelerate this lengthy process while it still has some membership and strike power left. Union sources say the surprise strike last weekend showed that the brotherhood still can shut down some carriers. They expect it to have a healthy impact on future talks over the future of the firemen.

Don’t be forced to walk the road with the majority; If you wish, make your own path. Treat others with respect and appreciation and your popularity will steadily increase. Dispense with the past and look forward the future. Believe it yourself and others will believe in you too. Tou can’t buy happiness with a paper dollar. He who cares not, is not cared for. Have pride but don’t be too proud to accept help. Daydreaming of "yesterday" and "tomorrow" is fine, but don’t daydream through "to-' day.” To be without an- ambition Is to be without a future. Others will think no more of you than you think of yourself. Time is often shortest for those who believe time is forever theirs. Two men calmly discussed peace can be more valuable than 2,000 fighting soldiers. Life is like a hill, one bn* to climb it to reach the top. One who claims to be a hero is often a coward. West leads the king of rtteOes, bedding the first trick. On the spade continuation East discards a diamond, and you take your ace. You have eight sure tricks and need one additional trick for the contract. Since q^des and diamonds are hopeless, you must look for the ninth trick in hearts or clubs. Correction. Look for the ninth trick in hearts AND chibs. First you lead a low club. When West plays low, you try a deep finese with dummy’s

nine. The idea is to pass the trick to East. Later you can take the king and ace of clubs, and if all the missing clubs drop dummy’s last club will be good. RETURNS DIAMOND East returns a diamond, and you win in your hand with the jack. Now the time has come to play for the hearts. The chibs will keep. Lead a low heart. When West plays low, try another deep finesse, this time with the nine of hearts. East wins with the jack and returns another diamond. Win with the queen of diamonds and lead a heart to dummy’s ace. Return with the ace at diamonds and cash the king of hearts. Ttfe queen drops, and your ten of hearts is good for the ninth trick. If the queen of hearts had not dropped, you would still be in position to try the king and ace of clubs. You would make the contract if either suit broke favorably. Solution Is Reported For Limestone Decay

the gale. They flashed a signal to the ship to float a line to the shore, but the message came back, “there is nothing left to float.”

CHICAGO UPI—A solution has been found to the monumental problem of decaying limestone, a New York University professor said Monday. Dr. Seymour Z. Lewin, here to address the annual meeting of the Indiana Limestone Institute, Bloomington, Ind., said he developed a liquid that would “recrystallize” limestone into something like much harder marble. The formula, he said, could mean a new lease on life for old states, monuments and building that have suffered from time and the elements. "Limestone is an aggregate of fine particles of calcium carbonate hardened over geological years,” he said. “Under pressure and high temperature the crystals become marble— bigger, more fused.”' Lewin emphasized treatment with his solution “does not alter the limestone, and don’t get translucent marble.” “In the case of monuments, the idea is not to alter in appearance the material the monument or statue is made of, yet to change it enough so it is more resistant to the elements," he said. Lewin said buildings also can be treated, though by the “less effective” method of spraying or painting instead of by immersion for several days, as with statues. Limestone Is soft and easily quarried, he said, but could be treated after it was cut to size. Thus, a “marble” building could be erected, he said. Lewin said he developed the solution at the conservatory center of NUY’s Institution of Fine Arts after two years of research. The formula is made of water, barium, hydroxide and urea, he said. His reaearch was supported by tee Alfred T. Sloan Foundation, tee Rockefeller Institute and tee Metropolitan Museum

of Art, he said. Lewin said the museum has many pieces which have suffered "the avages of time.”
