defending world champions to an 8-4 victory over the Giants. In their meeting, on Aug. 22 of last season, Marichal swung a hat at Roseboro’s head to touch off the wildest rhubarb in years. The shocking Incident cost Marichal $1,750—the largest fine ever levied against a player by a major league president— and his resulting nine-day suspension conceivably cost the Giants the National League pennant. It also precipitated a $110,000 legal suit against the high-kick-ing right-hander by Roseboro, who escaped the incident with only a two-inch gash on his head. “Except for the suit the incident is closed so far as I’m concerned,” Roseboro said Sunday. “If Marichal speaks to me first TU answer him Otherwise, no.” Roseboro answered Marichal the best way he knew how in the second inning at Phoenix when he drove in Ron Fairly and Jim Lefebvre ahead of him. It wasn’t the kind of dramatic hit about which legends grow. It was, in fact, a line single which hopped over the head of outfielder Jesus Alou for an inside-the-park variety. But for Roseboro it was extremely rewarding. Marichal was tagged for five runs and seven hits in his fiveinning stint. Claude Osteen, the Los Angeles started who will open the season for the Dodgers on April 12, was even less impressive, allowing nine hits and four runs in four innings.

NFL Season to Open Sept 10 NEW YORK UPI—National Football League Commissioner Pete Rozelle, predicting a five-million-fan gate this fall, today announced the 47th NFL season will open Sept. 10 with a nationally televised rematch of the Green Bay-Baltimore Western Conference playoff. The new Atlanta Falcons will open their first season 17 hours later, at home against Los Angeles. Five other Sunday openers are on tap—Chicago at Detroit, Cleveland at Washington, Minnesota at San Francisco, New York at Pittsburgh and Philadelphia at St. Louis. The Saturday night kickoff game between Green Bay and Baltimore will be at Milwaukee.

Depauw-State Meet Held Inside

Snow and cold weather forced track teams from DePauw and Ball State inside in what was to have been the season’s outside opener Saturday in Muncie. Consequently the ICC dual match was run off In State's spacious new football field-sized fieldhouse and ruled by mutual agreement an unofficial engagement. The unofficial score was Ball State 105%, DePauw 39%. The Cardinals swept blue ribbons in 15 of 17 events and managed to slam the 220-yard run and the two-mile run. DePauw’s wins came in the 880-yard relay and the 440-yard run. The first blue ribbon came the hard way for the visitors. Running the second leg in the relay, DePauw’s Jim Cook and his opponent collided as they headed into a baton change. The Ball State runner went down. Cook kept his feet but sustained a spike wound that later required hospitalization and four stitches. Running on that winning team which was clocked in 1:35.2 were Rick Jordan, Dari Lindquist, Ron Blauser and

Cook.

Steve Norris picked up DePauw’s other first place. Norris took the 440 In a time of :5lJ. and narrowly missed another win in the half mile run. In that race he finished second, onetenth of a second behind the winner’s time of 2:01.1. The rest of the Tiger scoring was wrapped up with a half dozen second placet and nine third spots. Among the wintry day’s better marks in the meet were Kurt Eichorst’s 53-6% heave In the shot put; a 6-7 leap by high jumper Fred Gamble; and Jim Stanford’s :56.9 in ths 440-yard hurdles. All three are from Ball

State.
