4-H members that are inter-

ested in applying for the State 4-H band should talk to their band director to get an application. Any 4-H members that is at least fifteen years old and _ plays an instrument should be * interested. The band will play * at the Purdue 4-H Round-up. 1 These applications must be in * before April 15. • • • * 4-H Garden, flowers or strawI berry members interested in * seeds or plants should notify * the County Extension Office in l the near future. * fee* ‘ Information about varieties * of strawberries might be of in-‘-terest to the gardeners. According to Jerry Hull, a horticulture specialist, probably the best * strawberry variety for an Indi- ) ana 4-H Strawberry project is ; Surecrop. No other variety has * as many favorable characteris- ! tics for this project as Sure-

: cro p?

* Mr. Hull’s second choice ! would be Sparkle (also sold as | Paymaster). It is not as resis- ■ tant to Verticillum as Surecrop ; and ripens five to seven days ; later. * * His next choice, Pocahontas, I Tennessee Beauty, Midway or | could be considered. * Pocahontas would be the high- ! est yielder with large, atislc? j tive fruit. Midway would be | better on heavy soils or irrigat- * ed plantings. Tennessee Beauty is resistant to most soil disease problems and well adapted to Indiana. It is very productive, ) but fruit size runs small. Cats- * km produces very attractive '.fruit and virus-free plants are ‘ productive, but fruits are soft ■and only average quality. It would only be fair in southern Tnriiana. Verticillium wilt can be a problem in soils that produced tomtaoes, potatoes, peppers, etc., within the last two or three years. This could be a problem for some 4-H strawberry growers. Resistant varieties are Surecrop, Tennessee Beauty, Catskill, Robinson and Premier. Earlidawn is very susceptible—Sparkle, Pocahontas, and Midway less susceptible but still poor risks on soils containing high level of verticillium in-

oculum.

• • • The Putnam County 4-H Share-the-Acts that participated in the District Contest at

Spencer last Monday night did a very good job. They did not get in the top placinga but their acts were very well accepted. Nancy Arnold was in the curtain act, and Keith Carrington, Ralph Fry, Vicki Judy, Sandra Sibbitt, Becky McFarland, Pam Price and Marie McKee were in the group act. • e e Overseed lawns during April. Spread the seed, then rake. Apply fertilizer after overseeding. Use a blend of bluegrasses in lawn seedings. A blend provides more disease and wear tolerance then one variety used alone. Use fertilisers high in nitrogen on lawns. ' • e • Reduce lodging this fall by applying an adequate supply of potassium fertilizer this spring. The lower intemodes of corn stalks are more solid, longer and healthy when the plants are well fertilized with potassium. Nixon To Speak To State GOP INDIANAPOLIS UPI— Former Vice President Richard M. Nixon will speak June 11 at an TwHiawa Republican fund-raising event at which the GOP hopes to draw a bigger crowd than the Democrats did at a similar event last weekend. The 5100 a ticket dinner will be held in the Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, which is an arena-type structure not previously used for large dinners. However Republican State Chairman Charies O. Hendricks said the choice was deliberate. “The Republican Citizens Finance Committee is thinking about having people come in after the dinner to hear Mr. Nixon’s speech,” Hendricks explained. Such an arrangement would enable the GOP to bring in a greater number than attended the Democratic 3100 a ticket dinner held last week at the Fairgrounds in the Manufacturers Building. Hendricks conceded Nixon probably was a candidate for President but said this was not the reason the GOP invited him. He said the state committee has not discussed, even Informally, its preference of the next presi-

dent.

Ask Authority Te Intervene INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Hie Oomraunfeaitton workers of America has asked for authority to intervals in a plan whereby General Telephone Co. would buy and operate long distance facilities from Indiana Bell Telephone Co. at Fort Wayne, Lafayette, Logansport and Terre Haute. Hie CWA told the Indiana Public Service Commission that since at is the exclusive collective bargaining representative of the affected employees, it should be a party to the case. “One of the significant factors which this commission must consider is the effect of the transfer on the maintenance and stability of an adequate labor force in the areas affected,” the CWA petition said.

Sukarno Orders Purge Of Reds SINGAPORE UPI—President Sukarno has ordered a complete purge of Communists from all government departments throughout Indonesia. Radio Jakarta said the order was signed by army chief LL Gen. Sukhamo for the President The President recalled that In his instruction dated Nov. 15, 1965, issued after the abortive Oct 1 coup, he had directed the dismissal of all government employes involved in the coup. Today’s order, he explained, was “to intensify and coordinate the purge of the government and make it dear from all elements of the counter-revolution-ary ex-FKL Communist party and its mass organizations.

State's largest Mine Is Closed PRINCETON UPI — Hie King’s Mine, believed to be the oldest and largest deep-shaft coal operation in Indiana, shut down Friday but officials hoped it would be only temporarily. Office manager Frank Scherrer said the mine was closed because of the summer slack season, “but we have high hopes that we’ll be back in business in the fell.” In the meantime, he added, negotiations were continuing with another company to operate the mine on a lease basis. The King’s Mine, operated by the Princeton Mining Co., had a payroll of 263. Once before, in 1957, it shut down during the summer, Scherrer said. "Some of our men will take other jobs and some will retire,” Scherrer said, “But this leaves only one big shaft mine left in the state, the Thunderbird at Stoelbum.” The King’s Mine, opened in 1923, is located three miles south of here on U. S. 41. It has an annual production of 560,000 tons of bituminous soft- coal. “We’re 450 feet deep, and that’s as deep as you’ll rind any mine in this part of the country,” Scherrer said. It was also the scene of a major mining disaster in July, 1948, when an explosion killed 13 men. That was two months before Scherrer went to work for the mine.

Sheinwold On Bridge Listen To Partner But Use Own Brain By Alfred Sheinwold A moralist might use today’s hand to prove that you’re better off when you don’t get what you want, or perhaps that Mother knows best. I prefer to put it this way: Listen to your partner, but use your own brains.

becomes established. Declarer wins a spade return, draws trumps and then discards a spade on dummy’s queen of diamonds. Hie contract is then un-

beatable.

That’s what happens when you give your partner what he asks for. Things go much better when you use your own brains.

MISSING JACK

Bast’s signal with the ten of diamonds is encouraging, showing diamond strength. If East had the jack of diamonds, however, he would play it instead of the ten. His failure to signal With the jack means that he

doesn’t hold the jack.

If West thinks of this, he will see exactly what will happen after a diamond continua-

other diamond, dummy’s quean etion. The only hope is to shift

to spades at the second trick in spite of East’s high diamond signal. When West shifts to spades, South’s ace is knocked out. Bast can continue spades when he gets in with the king of diamonds, and the defenders thus get two diamonds and two spades. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one club, and the next player bids one notrump. You hold: S-K Q 2; H-6 4; D-K 10 9 7 2; C-Q 7 3. What do you say? Answer: Double. If the opponents stay in notrump, you should collect a sizable penalty. If they run to anything but hearts, you will double again. If they bid hearts, you can trot out your diamond suit
