Obituaries
former Quincy Resident Dies Charles V. Rice, 78, died Friday afternoon at his home on Route 7, Bloomington. Mr. Rice was born at Quincy, Oct. 13, 1887, the son of Emma Dunnigan Rice and Robert Rice. He was a member of the Ellettsville Baptist Church, Surviving are his wife, Mingle Cooper Rice, one daughter, Mrs. Paul Berry of New Albany, one brother, Frank Rice of St Petersburg, Fla., and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Zenor and Mrs. Essie Haysley, both of Spencer. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p. m. at the West Ok Son Funeral Home in Spencer. The Rev. William Randell will officiate. Burial will be in the Valhalla Cemetery at Bloomington. Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 p.m. Saturday. Reuchdale Rites For Elmer Witt Elmer Parker Witt, 76 Roachdale, passed away in the Putnam County Hospital Friday morning where he had been admitted on Thursday. He was bom in Kentucky, August 10,1889, the son of William and Amanda Windward Witt. He was married to Oakley Scott, in Danville, Illinois, on October 2, 1919. The deceased is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Helen Kennedy, Cloverdale; and Mrs. Christine Bachert, Ladoga; a brother, Leonard, Roachdale; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Perkins Funeral Home in Roachdale with burial in the Roachdale Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. 1. K. Robinson Died Saturday Joseph V. Robinson, 81, Coatesville, died this morning in the Methodist Hospital at Indianapolis. He was born January 18, 1885, the son of Galen and Jane Newman Robinson. On July 28,1928, he was married to Margaret Rodgers. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He was survived by the wife; five children; 11 grandchildren; 82 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Arrangements are in charge of the Weaver Funeral Home in Coatesville.

Style Shew Is Set For May 4 Take a bit more time and be a bit more particular with that Easter outfit you are making for yourself and the children. Then you will be all set to enter the Homemaker’s Style Show May 4th. This year, to observe National Home Demonstration Week, the County Home Demonstration Council plans include the County Homemaker’s Style Show. Any woman may enter, but if she wishes to compete for the privilege of representing the county at the State Show this Fall, she must follow certain rules. It has been many years since the county women have been able to exhibit their baking and needlecraft skills locally. Included in the plans fqr the day is such an exhibit. Entry blanks are available from the Extension Office or a friend who belongs to a Home Demonstration Club. Return properly filled blanks to the Extension Office by April 27. Orders Ban On Two Corporations INDIANAPOLIS UP! —Secretary of State John D. Bottorff said today he was issued a cease and desist order against two men corporations having the same name as a company listed on the New Tork Stock Exchange. The order also is directed against three men involved in the new corporations. Bottorff advised Indiana banks that the stock of Columbia Gas System, Inc., of Georgia and Columbia Gas System, Inc., of Indiana, is not listed on the New Tork Stock Exchange. He said both are new firms incorporated by Harlan Orr of South Bend, John B. Irwin of Miami, Fla., and Ray Faulkner of Mishawaka. “At least three banks have accepted Columbia Gas System of Georgia stock as collateral for loans to a mew identified as James R. Hawthrne of Syracuse, Ind., In excess of 10,000, Bottorff said. “The bankers say they were led to believe the stock was that which is listed on the New Tork Stock exchange at about 328 per share rather than stock of the non-listed corporation,’’ he added. Woman Physician Probe Underway INDIANAPOLIS UPI— Indiana correction commission Bernard Dolnick said today the first woman physician ever to serve the state prison has been “locked out” pending an investigation of “certain incidents.” Dr. Else K. Bell, appointed physician for the prison at Michigan City in 1963, was barred from entering the. institution while an investigation was made under direction of warden Ward Lane. Dolnick and Lane declined to explain the nature of the “certain incidents,” but both said they were of a professional na-
ture.

Mir. and Mrs. Eugene Callender returned recently from a short visit with Mrs. Callender's brother and family, Mr. and Mirs. Hubert Clodfelter of Detroit. Ervin Battin, 49, Reelsville, Route 1, was jailed at 4:30 Friday afternoon by Sheriff Kenneth Knauer on a Putnam Circuit Court warrant charging assault and battery. Mr. and Mirs. Russell Clapp left early Friday morning for Palm Beach, Florida. They will visit relatives and also they will see Mr. and Mrs. .Harvin Freeman, who recently moved to North Palm Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Clem Crowe of Eden, N.Y. were guests Wednesday night of his aunt, Mrs. Sophia Kerr and Mr. and Mrs. Orville Webb. Mr. Crowe was one of five selected this year on Indiana Basketball’s Hall of Fame members. Mesdames Jean Dietz, Kay Rowan, Mary Williams and Gladys Howard started yester day to Clearwater, Florida. Mrs. Diets will drive them and they will return Sunday.. Mrs. Williams was formerly housemother at the Alpha Gamma Delta and the others are now in charge of homes at DePauw University. Any parent in Clinton Twp. who has a child that will attend 1st grade in kindergarten and who hasn’t filled an enrollment application, please call Mrs. Mike O’Hair, PE 9-2592 before Thursday March 24. To be eligible to attend Kindergarten or the 1966-67 first grade, your child must be six years of age on or before October 15, 1966. Mrs. Dellen Blanton will be hostess to the Big Walnut Baptist Mission Society Thursday evening at 7 o’clock at her home on Road 40. Mrs. Frances Ball win be in charge of the lesson which is a study of mission work in Alaska. There will be the annual election of officers for the coming year. WASHINGTON UPI — The United States has banned shipments to Southern Rhodesia of all commodities “that are important to the economy of that country.” The action Friday extended a previous embargo on petroleum products and some guns and ammunition to rubber, chemicals, machinery, iron and steel products and other goods.

Reading Club Meets With Mrs. McCnUough The Federated Reading Club met at the home of Mrs. O. D. McCullough, with Mrs. Ross A. Runyan assistant hostess. The meeting was opened by the members repeating the Collect. The club signed cards and sent them to two of the members in the hospital, Mrs. Bruce Shannon and Miss Ida Wood. A program committee was appointed, Mrs. Runyan, Mrs. Russell Thomas and Miss Carrie Pierce. Mention was made of the Putnam County Federation of Clubs, to be held April 12th at 9:30 at Union Chapel Church west of Morton. A good attendance is urged. Make reservations with Miss Carrie Pierce. For the afternoon program Mrs. Bernard Handy very ably reviewed the book, “Green Medicine,” by Margaret Kreig. The book deals with the experiences of a professional plant hunter, involved with the discovery and development of new drugs, in industry, in government, in universities, and in private practice as physicians and business consultants. The upswing of scientific interest in drug plants, dates back to World War n. Scientists were hunting replacements for quinine and other drugs. Mrs. Handy had several samples of roots, herbs and seeds, which were lent to her by Dr. Winona Welsh; some were prepared by Dr. T. G. Yuncker. During the social hour delicious refreshments were served.
Club Meets At Christian Home The Business and Professional Women’s Club held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday evening at the Greencastle Christian Home. There were 42 members and one guest present. Mrs. Mary Shaw, president of the local club, conducted the business meeting. Officers for the coming year were elected: Mrs. Mary Shaw, president; Mrs. Wilma Handy, vice president; Mrs. Jean Brown, 2nd vice president; Mrs. Marianna Theobold, recording ^secretary; Miss Judy Reynolds, corresponding secretary; Miss Ruth Ann Brown, treasurer; Mrs. Mary Ellen Glidewell, director, and Elizabeth M. Ward, director.
Dr. Winona Welch presented Miss Lorna Barber who have an interesting account of the past two years which she spent in Lebanon and Jordan. Miss Barber was serving with the World Church Service working with the refugee people of these countries. A social hour and refreshments ended the meeting. Hostesses were Mrs. Ethel Yuncker, Dr. Winona Welch, Mrs. Lucia Taylor, Mrs. Harriett Sutton, Mrs. Ozella Wren, Dr. Anna Nichols and Margaret Nelson.
Mildred Rhea Bride Of Wayne Buis Wayne Buis and Mildred Rhea were united in marriage in a beautiful double ring ceremony in the home of Rev. and Mrs. James Merrill of Indianapolis, on Thursday, March 10th. Wayne is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Buis and Mildred is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oran Rhea. Wayne is in the U. S. Army. They left on a short wedding trip and spent some time with Wayne’s brother, Darrell, stationed in Fort Knox. They returned home Saturday. Wayne left Sunday for Fort Dix, New Jersey, before going overseas to France. Mrs. Buis returned to her home and a position as bookkeeper at N. F. P. (Lloyd Buis and Sons). A miscellaneous shower was given for the young couple by Jim and Norma Chestnut on Wednesday, March 9th. Many useful gifts were received. They would love to thank everyone.
Has Long Service In Eastern Star Mrs. Virginia Brann was Installed recently as Worthy Matron of Greencastle Chapter Order of Eastern Star, launching her on another year of fraternal work. She became a member of O. E. S. June 17, 1938. The next year she was a member of the chorus and drill team. She continued to serve tlv chapter in other stations—Esther, Martha, Marshal and Secretary. She is a member of Washburn Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and was the Regent in 1949-51. She and her husband later moved to Bloomington, where she continued her Organization Interests and became a Past Worthy President of the Social Order of Beauceant, Bloomington Assembly No. 156 in 1956.
(Wives and widows of Knights Templar.). In 1960-61 she served as Vice Regent of Bloomington Chapter of D. A. R. She is a member of Putnam County and State Historical Societies. Her husband, Gerald Brann died Jan. 5, 1960. He was a past Commander of Greencastle Commandery No. 11, K. T., Past High Priest of Greencastle Chapter No. 22, R. A. M. and Past Illustrious Master of Bloomington Council No. 87 R. & S. M. Mrs. Brann is the daughter of Howard C. Dean of Roachdale, Past Master, Temple Lodge No. 47 F. & A. M., Past High Priest of Greencastle Chapter No. 22; R. A. M., and Past Commander of Greencastle Commandery No. 11, K. T.
Bainbridge Club Met March 8 The Home Demonstration Club of Bainbridge Community met in the home of Phylis Smith March 8. Happy Anniversary was sung to Marilyn Roth. The flag salute was led by Louise Nicholson and Eileen Kayes led the group in the saying of the club Creed. The safety report given by Carol Porter was to be sure and get tetanus shots and vaccinations before summer. The Outlook chairman reported that synthetic fiber rugs are higher and the mam-made rugs are less expensive. A letter was read from the American Cancer Society offering films and programs. Also a letter was submitted from Mrs. Benner reminding of the Home Demonstration Week Program. A tentative date for this is May 4, Good Neighbor Week. Becky Phipps gave the lesson on “Program Planning.” A lime sherbet dessert was served after the meeting. Marion Lawson won the door prize. The group will meet again April 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the home of Mrs. Nancy Clifford.

Lighter Explodes, Woman Injured EVANSTON, HI. UPI — Mrs. Irene Tarsia, 52, suffered severe injuries when a cigarette lighter that had been filled with gunpowder exploded in her hand. Officials at St. Francis hospital said the woman suffered the loss of three fingers of her right hand and the tips of two fingers on her left. Police said the woman’s son, Andrew, 16, told them he had filled the lighter with gunpowder from a firecracker and had replaced the wick with a fuse, intending to explode it on a vacant lot. Andrew told police he placed the lighter in the rear of his bedroom dresser drawer. His mother apparently found it and tried to use it to light a cigarette.
