Candidate For Joint Senator

Sherman O. Kessler, well known Montgomery County ^ farmer, is a candidate for the Republican nomination for joint _ state senator from Putnam, t Parke, Fountain and Montgom1 ery counties. * | Kessler was graduated from | - Ladoga High School and re- * ceived his bachelor of science J degree, with distinction, from * the Purdue School of agriculi ture in 1936. He was ranked No. J 1 in his class; was a member of * the Purdue intercollegiate live- ! stock judging team; and was a * member of Alpha Gamma Rho, * Alpha Zeta scholastic honorary and Sigma Xi science honorary. In 1938 he received his master of science degree in agricultural economics from Purdue. ‘He then pursued his graduate ^education at the University of Chicago under a Farm Founda^tion Fellowship. ^ He took part in a research project addle working for Pur.'due and the U.S. Department of ‘Agriculture from 1936 through 1938. Hie study resulted In a

major change In adiwlnlstraUesi of the Indiana Common School Fund.

He also acted as economist in form management, under a Purdue project, from 1938 through 1943. He is author of a number of extension bulletins on Indiana and federal tax laws. Mr. Kessler is married to the former Jane Jarrell of Frankfort They have a 10-year-old son, Mark, who is in the fourth grade at the Ladoga schooL

Death Comes To Venerable Man ST. LOUIS UPI—Venerable Lee Mtariwether had one possession that through all the years stood out in Ida memory above all the others—a 120-year-old rocking chair. Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, bounced Lee on his knee in the solid walnut rocker. And Samuel Clemens, literature’s Mark Twain, sat in it when he came to visit in 1902. '‘Everytime I ait on that chair, memory summons the famous men who once eat there,” Meriwether used to say. ‘Those men sank long ago into the ocean of yesteryears.” Yet, for all his own yesteryears and memories, Lee Meriwether, age 103, was young at heart. He enjoyed dinner Saturday, told a few jokes and did a little writing. He wasn’t quite ready to die. Rut death came that night in a hospital bed where be was confined with a fractured Up. A heart attack stilled this city’s fabled author, lawyer, world traveler and unredoubtable Southern gentleman. Lea Meriwether.

Dear Editor: This is in answer to Tuesday's article on railroad crossings and safe driving by State Trooper Jack Hanlon. First, I would like to say that I agree that there are people who do drive recklessly while crossing railroad tracks, but I think that a lot of innocent people were condemned in your article. Secondly, you said to look both ways before crossing a railroad. A lot of crossings have obstacles that make it impossible to see anything if you do look. Thirdly, you said that driver carelessness is the only answer for these accidents. There are sometimes other conditions entering the situation such as slick roads, poor crossing facilities, faulty cars, and traffic. Due to these conditions, I would have to disagree with your statement Some people think that it is the policeman’s duty to see that trains are slowed down also. A train should slow down when going through a town, incorporated or not for the safety of the public as well as the passengers. You said that there is little or no excuse for train-car accidents. Maybe there isn’t but many of these train-car accidents are the fault of the railroad, not the car. Yet, you seem to insinuate that the car is always negligent In summation to what I’ve said, the driver of the car is sometimes at fault but likewise so are the railroad companies and the policemen. I don’t think that drivers alone should be ridiculed and accused of carelessness when it is also carelessness on the part of our railroads and our law enforcement officers. Boys Blamed For Explosion . WARSAW, Ind. UPI — Authorities blamed email boys for an explosion of a 1,000-gallon tank of liquid petroleum gas which leveled the fire-damaged Silver Lake Locker Plant Sunday night. Koscisuko County Sheriff Howard Holbrook said a space heater apparently ignited gas leaking from the tank through a valve turned on by one of three boys known to have been playing in the area. The tank valve was turned off after a fire Feb. 22 extensively damaged the plant. The building had not been used since then.

During March 2-19, about five million "anniversary cards” will be sent to J. C. Penney Company headquarters in New York —and every one will arrive punched with holes. While not greetings in the usual sense, the 2 by 1 inch perforated cards are important Each will represent a sale and, hopefully, a satisfied, well-serv-ed customer during Penney’s 64th anniversary observance. The tiny cards will be sent to Company headquarters from Penney stores around the nation, including the one here. They form the basis of the firm’s semi • automatic stock control system for selected lines of staple, year-round merchan-

dise such as underwear, hosiery, men’s shirts, lingerie and work clothing. Customers see the cards in stores attached to articles of merchandise. Bach card contains such Information as lot number, color, size and store number. When an item is sold, the card is removed by the store manager or sales associate and mailed to Penney’s data processing center at its New York headquarters. At this point, computers take over, “reading” the pin hole code in the cards and reordering stock for the stores. At the same time, the computers will compile sales statistics and other data.

Spring Weather In Many States By United Pratt International Most of the nation enjoyed mild temperatures and fair skies today. North Dakota communities braced for floods. Temperatures climbed into the 70s Monday in the Great Plains, melting snows and frozen earth. The runoff threat-

ened to push the Red River of the north and the Grand Forks River out of their banks. Army engineers, civil defense and Red Gross officials prepared for a flood crest of 48-51 feet forecast at Grand Forks, N. D. Such a flood would isolate and cripple the city, officials said. Temperatures climbed to the 70s and 80s from California to Florida Monday. The weather bureau said no major changes in the pleasant conditions were expected. The only freezing weather reported today was along the Canadian border, stretching from Maine to North Dakota. Showers were reported today in an area from Alabama to Virginia end from northern California into Idaho.
