Disastw Warning WASHINGTON UPI — The Commerce Department is earmarking 37 million of its fiscal 1967 budget to begin work on a system which would warn communities of impending natural disasters. In a memorandum to President Johnson Wednesday, Commerce Secretary John T. Connor said the proposed system eventually would warn hundreds of communities of approaching hurricanes, tornadoes, tidal waves, floods and other hazards. The blueprint was prepared last fall by several government agencies, he said.

Foolish Signal Alerts Declarer By Alfred SheiawoM ha some hands the correct defensive signal tells your partner when to take an ace or what suit to save. In many others, a signal cannot help your partner but may give important information to declarer. West overtook with the king and tried to cash the jack of hearts, but South ruffed. Needing the rent of the tricks, South had nothing to fear unless th« clubs broke badly. South first drew trumps with the ace, queen and jack. South next led' the jade of spades, and West began a signal by playing the eight. When declarer next took the ace of spades, West completed Jus signal by playing the seven of spade*. The signal could not help East since if East had the ace of spades he would take the setting trick with or without a signal. Tbs signal served only to toll South that Wont had started with an even number of spades—two or four. MISSING FOUE East had thrown, in order, the deuce, trey, five and six of spades. Since East was an orderly person South felt sure that the four of spades would have appeared if East had held it. Clearly, West held the four of apados, and his signal was meant to show four spades rather than just two. By ***■ tim* South knew that West had started with five hearts, four spades and three trumps. There was room in his hand for only on# club. Declarer therefore led a low club to dummy’s ace and returned the ten through East. If East played low. South would let the ten ride for a finesse. If East covered the ten with the jack of clubs, South would win and get to dummy with a trump to lead another club through East. Either way South would make the contract. Cut Down Egg Breakage BARTLESVILLE, Okla. UPI —The paper-pulp type egg flats used for shipment by egg farmers and processors across the country are being replaced by plastic ones that assure there’ll be no more scrambled eggs except at the breakfast table. A new high density polyethlene plastic egg flat has been developed by the Phillips Petroleum Company, which says it has reduced egg breakage considerably during shipment.

DAILY QUESTION Partner open* with one diamond, and the next player passes. You hold: S-9 6 5 3 2 H-A Q 4; D-8; C- J 9 7 6. What do you say? Answer: Bid one spade. Any five-card suit, no matter how weak, is biddable if the hand as a whole is strong enough for a response. In this case you have 7 points in high cards, ample for a response at the level of one.

Peace Only Hope
For Cong: LB J
WASHINGTON UPI — President Johnson said Tuesday that the Communists in Viet Nam must know by now that total victory is beyond reach and that their only hope for peace is
through negotiations.
“Let them not suppose that our desire for peace springs from weakness or hesitation” the President said. “It springs, rather, from a further recognition of our knowledge that the search for peace also requires great skill and great courage, j “If there are others," however, who do want peace and if it is equally true that total victory is beyond expectation for them — as they must now know it is —then there is only one answer: Negotiate peace and let war stand aside while the people of Viet Nam choose. For our part, we will be willing to abide by
the outcome.
