The Lighter Side

By DICK WEST . WASHINGTON UPI—Preslt dent Johnson, who is a strong man, could probably throw a silver dollar across the Peder- - nales if he wanted to. > But he could never hope to y make the splash that George Washington did by flinging a cartwheel across the Rappahannock. limes have changed too much. Since Washington’s era, It has become the custom for people to throw things into rivers ' instead of over them.

IMS Is Winner -■ la Viet Debate WASHINGTON UPI — The Senate’s current “great debate” over Viet Nam has ended with President Johnson a clear winner — at least on the record. Both the Senate and the House, by overwhelming margins, approved his request for $4.8* billion in additional military aid for Viet Nam Tuesday. But the big vote could not mask the deep concern in some congressional quarters over the administration’s policy. And the White House realized this. In a statement praising ' the congressional action, it noted that the President would “continue to act responsibly as commander-in-chief. “As he said in New York last week,” the statement asserted, *“Our measured use of force must be continued, but this is prudent firmness under careful * control.’" v There was ample evidence of ' the fine Johnsonian hand in the Senate voting Tuesday. Commenting on the key 92-5 vote which sank Sen. Wayne L. Morse’s attempt to rescind the 1964 Tonkin Gulf resolution, the White House said the vote “would have been 94 to 5 if to additional senators who announced their opposition to Sen. Morse’s motion had been present. Only one senator was unrecorded." But the President is too experienced a congressional hand to consider his victory as anything but temporary.

As a result, Johnson now deems it necessary to cast about $50 million upon the waters in an effort to restore some degree of purity to the nation's rivers and streams. He requested these funds for an anti-pollution program, which he sent to Congress on the day after Washington’s birthday. One of the President’s goals is to clean up the Potomac, which once coursed by the nation’s capital but which now just sort of lies there and festers. Johnson has said that, the Potomac should be made “a model of beauty and recreation for the entire country.” This is going to take a bit of doing. At present recreational opportunities are almost nil. The river is too polluted for swimming and is so wide you can’t even have fun throwing silver dollars across it. Contrary to what I had assumed, those of us who live in the Washington area aren’t primarily to blame for fouling up the Potomac. According to the Worthing Corp., which makes equipment for pollution control, livestock grazing on farms upstream cause as much contamination as 3,500,000 people.

CLOVERDALE HI-UTES

By NANCY BARKER Cloverdale was thrilled to be chosen by the Time-Life Publishing Co. to represent the Midwest in their special educational issue of Life. Mr. Fred Snell arrived on the scene last Friday and spent the afternoon photographing the Clever Clovers and attending our bang-up pep session. Saturday morning, bright and early.

he attended our parade and car judging, and accompanied the Cloverdale fans to Brazil where he witnessed “Hoosier Hysteria" in top form. After winning the final game of the Sectional, the fans returned to the gym for more celebrating and so the pictures rolled on. We’re backing the Clovers all the way! Yeah, Team, GO! Congratulations to Bainbridge

oil winning the Greencastle Sectional. We wish them the best of luck in the Regional. Teh Thespian Troupe needs a Wicker Setee and a Philippino Chair for their productions on March 25. If anyone knows where these items can be located, please contact Mrs. Fraknlin, or simply call or write to Cloverdale High School.

Spring Cleaning Develops Into A "Year Round Job"

NEW YORK UPI — The traumatic event known as “Spring cleaning” is no more, claims one professional cleaning organization. “A good portion of the 48 million women who faithfully tore up the house and scrubbed it from top to bottom in former days” no longer does so in one all-enveloping sweep. Instead, cleaning is a year-round process in most homes and today there is a more significant peak in the fall than in the spring. So says Servicemaster, which calls itself the largest home and office cleaning concern in the nation and is in with a roundup on how times have

changed.

To the professional cleaning people, not only is the timing of cleanong changed, but so has the approach. Air-conditioning, new and cleaner heating systems, self-cleaning appliances, and easy-care fabrics for curtains,, draperies and bedding all have combined to minimize need for the annual scrubdown. For Instance, says Servicemaster, mother used to hawgr out and air bedding prior to a seasonal changeover. Daughter merely machine washes bedding and if she uses an electric blanket rarely changes the weight of the bed covers. Mother took down, washed and stretched the curtains and gave the blinds a scrub. Daughter dips the easy-care curtains or drapes in suds or sends them

to the cleaners and she’s apt to use a miracle cleaner on the blinds. Mother put slipcovers on furof two men considered likely to niture to make the house look cooler and protect good fabrics from summer dust and fading. Daughter depends on the air-conditioner for cooling and filtering dirt from the air. Mother would spend a day scrubbing the range. Daughter uses an easy-care cleaner that unpeals the crustiest of stoves rapidly or owns a self-cleaning

oven.

Mother scrubbed kitchen and bathroom walls and did the carpets herself. Daughter is learning to contract for these drudgery jobs and on a year-round basis so that carpets can be done one month, walls another, floors another, whenever they need care. Mother cleaned the attic or storeroom. Daughter isn’t likely to have such collector’s haunts in today’s new homes and apartments.

BUSINESS HIGHLIGHTS Sy United Pres* International Permanent press now goes into lingerie. The use of the new wrinkle-resistant fabric treatment that eliminates ironing usually has been associated with outer ready-to-wear. Now, one maker (Lovable) is introducing it in its brassiere line so that bras keep their shape and fit and won’t wrinkle or droop. The firm tested bra fabrics through as many as 40 washings before introducing it in lingerie.

It was bound to happen — sunglass lens keyed to eye makeup. Women’s Wear Daily reports that one Los Angeles firm (Tropic-cal) is introducing the specs in 10 shades of lenses to complement eye cosmetics an dress fabrics.

The nude look so prevalent in spring and summer fashions for women will catch on with a handful of go-go girls, but not with the remainder of the nation’s 70 million females. So says the Corset and Brassiere Council. It does not predict what the next “great look” in fashion will be, but quotes a foundation industry spokesman as follows: “Through ‘New Looks and H-line, sheaths and shifts women have relied on brassieres and girdles to mold figure to fashion. And while foundations have become ever lighter, ever more soft and more comfortable, they are essentials as ever to the Chick and well-groomed appearance.
