UPI Favors Michigan City To Win State INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Fourth-ranked Michigan City, "well overdue” to cash in on its press slippings, was picked by United Press International today to win the Indiana high school basketball tourney. The Red Devils have never made it to the four-team finals. They got as far as the final eight just once, in 1935. They have been among the top contenders often, but their luck never held. “We’re well overdue to get some place in this tourney,” said veteran coach Doug Adams, blit he added he isn’t kidding himself. 'Tve never seen any phase of this tourney that’s easy,” he said. Adams, in his ninth year as Michigan City’s head coach, said his rangy club is one of the best the school has ever had depthwise “and we have a bench as good as any we’ve ever had.” He predicted LaPorte will give his boys a tough game, should they meet, and top-rated South Bend Central, if their path crosses in Elkhart’s regional. Among Adams’ key players are 6-6 Terry Morse, Jim Cadwell and Bob McFarland, both 6-5, 6-4 Dennis Krueger and 6-3 Harold Kennedy. Michigan City, 15-3 going into the final weekend of the regular season, hasn’t been beaten Since dropping a 74-73 holiday tourney title game at Elkhart. *T think these boys have learned a lemon not to be overconfident,” he said. “They’re just humble enough to get the ******

Wilt Leads 79ers To L A. Victory •y United freu International Wilt Chamberlain’s SO points was far abort of the 65 he scored the last time he faced the Los Angeles Lakers, but it was more than enough as the Philadelphia 76ers knocked over Los Angeles, 136-121, Thursday night in the only scheduled National Basketball Association game in the country. Chamberlain and his mates played nearly even ball with the Lakers in the first half and then ripped It open during the third quarter. Head Coach Dolph Schayes of the 76ers said after the game, ‘if we win three out of our four next road games, we have a good shot at the Eastern Division title. When a team shoots a percentage like we did to night I doubt If they’d lose their game.” Laker Coach Fred Schaus said about his victorious foe, “the way they shot tonight, I really don’t think any team in the NBA could have beat them. They didn’t shoot spasmodically as many teams do. Rather, they were consistent from all parts of the floor all night.” The winners hit a red-hot 63 per cent against the Western Division lealers.

DePauw Tigers Face Evansville's Winning Aces Tomorrow Night

“Well, what do we do now?” DePauw coach Elmer McCall glumly asks himself. He has just watched his smallish Tigers drop a second cliff-hang-er to one of the ICG’s top two teams. The 97-90 overtime loss to Indiana State was an appropriate encore for DePauw’s 95-93 loss to Evansville just 21 days ago. But alas, the outcome was the

After that disappointing Ace defeat the Tigers went into a horrendous three-game tailspin. They loot decisions to Butler, Valparaiso and Ball State by monstrous deficits of 44, 39 and 34. They reawakened, however, to stomp St. Joseph’s, 88-73, at home and catch Wheaton on the road, 81-78. Then came the Sycamore loss. McCall rightfully is concerned wtih the 10-10 Tigers’ mental state. They are 8-2 outside the ICC, but just the reverse in the loop. Naturally they hope to whip the Aces, but after falling off the mountain the second time just at the crest, it’s sort of tough to start climbing all over again, especially in this league. About the only switch McCall contemplates for the Aces will be one he instituted unexpectedly against Indiana State. Six-one Denny Barrett probably will get the nod at guard instead of 5-9 Dan Schermer. Barrett’s brother is a spark plug for Indianapolis Howe. Schermer, along with his playmats 5-6 Jack Hogan, gavt the Aces fits hero in January. But Schermer isn’t as strong—

he weighs 30 pounds less—and he hasn’t been able materially to help the Tigers rebound. McCall will, however, be giving up Schermer’s defensive edge. There is little to choose between in shooting. Barrett’s hit .316 as a reliefer in 19 games. Schermer has shot .366

Two of Nation's Top Scorers Meet In Big Ten Game Sat.

CHICAGO UPI — Michigan risks its Big Ten lead against Purdue Saturday in a highlight conference basketball game pitting the Wolverines’ Cazzie Russell against the Boilermakers’ Dave Schellhase in a head-on scrap between the loop’s two top pointmakers. There will be a full conference schedule with Northwestern at Indiana, Michigan State

while averaging 6.95 points per outing. Barrett is averaging 4.11 but twice has hit 14. Elsewhere McCall will call on 6-6 sophomore Tom McGurk at center; all-ICC second team forwards Morgan Everson, 6-3, and Stan Bahler, 6-3, and Hogan at guard.

Monroe Open To Boaters and Swimmers Now

INDIANAPOLIS UPI—Swimmers and boat enthusiasts will be on Indiana’s largest manmade lake this summer, but the state’s fishermen will have to wait until Jan. 1, 1967, to drop their lines at Monroe Reservoir. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources passed a regulation prohibiting fishing at the reservoir until Jan. 1, and Director Woodrow Fleming of the Division of Fish and Game said the regulation was passed because only about 6 out of 100 fish in the water would be large enough to keep.” He said a study has shown the spawn of largemouth bass at the reservoir has produced a large number of fish, but they are only five to seven inches long now, below ordinary “keep” standards. The department also barred fishermen from the Salamonie River until Dec. 31, 1967, to insure a good fish population for 1968. Officials said biologists have eliminated rough fish from the river, which will serve, along with its tributaries, to create the 2,830-acre Salamonie Reservoir.

at Wisconsin, Minnesota at Dll nois and Iowa at Ohio State in the othei; contests. All will be played in the afternoon with the Buckeye-Hawkeye clash on the network television show. Russell leads the league In scoring with a 32.5 point per game average compared to Schellhase’s 28.8 mark for second place. But for the season, Schellhase has the top scoring average for all games, 31-1 points per game, compared to 30-L for Russell. Schellhase won the legal scoring crown last season with Russell second. Michigan, beaten only by Illinois in eight conference games, boasted a 7-1 league record for a one-game margin over Michigan State, the league’s point favorite to drop the Boilermakers and continue on top of the heap. The Wolverines have lost once in four games at home, to Illinois, while Purdue has yet to win a road game. The Boilermakers share last place with Wisconsin with a 2-6 league record. Indiana was the only other favorite on the card, rated a five-point choice over Northwestern. The Wildcats have won one of four on the road, while the Hoosiers have lost at home only to Illinois, who was Northwestern’s only road victim. The other three games all were rated as even by the handicappers, obviously taking the sites of the game into consideration. Michigan State, the legue’s best defensive team, has won two or four road games, and Wisconsin has won only twice in four home starts. Minnesota has won one of four road games and Illinois has lost twice at home in four games. Ohio State has lost only once at home and Iowa has not won a road- game.
