Business Highlights

Declarer took the first trick in dummy with the ace of hearts, returned to his hand with a spade and led his singleton club, losing the king to the ace. Now South would make his contract if he could gain the lead in time to discard a heart or a diamond on dummy’s queen of clubs. East returned the queen of diamonds, South covered with the king, and West won with the ace. West returned the deuce of diamonds, and East took file ten. Now East switched to the nine of hearts, and West won with the jack. West had to know that he could not lead another diamond, just as East had known in switching back to hearts. West did cash the queen of hearts, and South was down

one.

HOW THEY KNEW East and West were not guessing when they played just the right number of tricks In hearts and diamonds. They informed each other by the cards they led. When you return a small card in a suit partner has led, you lead your original fourthhighest card if you started with four or more cards of the suit. If you started with three or two cards in the suit, you return the highest card you have left at that time. Since West returned the deuce of diamonds at the fifth trick, he showed that he had started with exactly four diamonds. East counted his own diamonds and those held by dummy and easily worked it out that South had started with only two diamonds. Therefore it was necessary toswitch back to hearts. Since East then led the nine of hearts, he showed that he had started with fewer than four hearts. West could then work it out that South had started with at least three hearts; and it was therefore safe to cash the queen of hearts to defeat the contract. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one spade, and the next player passes. You hold: S-6 5 H-K Q J 4 D-A 8 2 C-9 8 S. What do you say? ANSWER: Bid 1 NT. You would bid a suit If you had a decent five-card suit to show, but there is no virtue in going to the level of two in a four-card suit with only 10 points In high cards. If partner cannot find another bid over your response of 1 NT, you will not miss a game.

Study Garnishee INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The Indiana Legislature Advisory Commission has decided to look into garnisheeing of wages after receiving a report stemming from the recent suicide of Carl Clark, a Ford Motor Co. em-

ploye in Illinois.

State Rep. William E. Bablnscak, D-Munster, gave a report on his preliminary investigation of the incident and on a sug-

gested new law.

Clark’s wages were garnisheed heavily. Including the loss of a full week’s pay, to satisfy a lien for more than 9200 in taxes owed when he was a resident of the Valparaiso area. Babinscak said he believes Clark had “refused to cooperate” and thereby compounded his problems brought about by failing to pay or make arrangements tp pay delinquent state gross income taxes despite frequent notices and advisories the state said he ignored. Babinscak said the suicide could not be placed at Indiana’s doorstep but that the tragedy emphasized the need for a revision of state garnishee laws. He said he favors an amend-

ment along the Ones of an Illinois law which provides that the wages of no employee may be garnisheed for more than 15 per cent of the gross wages. House Speaker Richard Bodine, D-Mishawaka, said he felt that before the commission does anything it should confer with Atty. Gen. John J. . Dillon and State Revenue Commissioner William Fortune. .. Tentative plans were made to hear from Dillon and Fortune at the next meeting.

Sinai Hospital physicians called in a consultant from the Wayne State University Medical School to help them diagnose the condition of the 59-year-old Rabbi who was shot by Richard Wishnetsky, 23, last Saturday during synagogue services. Wishnetsky then shot himself. He died Wednesday. Dr. Stephen Gurdjian, professor of neurosurgery at WSU, joined with the hospital doctors in deciding "not to altar the current management of the Rabbi’s care at this time” although they reported Rabbi Adler’s condition had "worsened slightly.” The Rabbi, whose condition was listed as "very critical,” did not regain consciousness since the shooting.
