* South takes the ace of hearts, .counting 11 tricks in top cards. * He needs an extra trick in clubs -or diamonds. The diamond fin- * esse is more likely to succeed, * but should try first for the •extra club trick. ‘ • South draws trumps, discardI(ng a heart from dummy, cashes * the queen of hearts and takes - the ace and king of clubs. He 'then discards his last club on gummy’s king of hearts and -ruffs a club. If each opponent

had started with clubs, dummy’s last club would be good and the slam would be home. The clubs break badly, but South is in position to try for his diamond trick. Since East is out of everything but diamonds, South has a cinch. DEEP FINESSE South leads a diamond, planning to put in dummy’s nine if West plays low. East wins with the jack and must then return a diamond to dummy’s ace-queen. If West puts up the ten of diamonds, declarer plays the queen from dummy|. East wins with the king, but must then return a diamond to dummy’s ace-nine. Either way dummy gets a free finesse, and the slam is assured. After drawing trumps, South would go down if he took the diamond finesse before working o£ the clubs. East would get out safely with a club, and South would still have to lose a second diamond trick. VENTURA, Calif. UPI—Sarah and Mattie Duckworth, Indiana natives who became the oldest twin sisters in the nation and perhaps the world, observed their 100th birthday anniversary today in a convalescent hospital. Attendants at Bard Convalescent Home of County General Hospital said a cake was prepared fpr the centennial celebration. A year ago, the twins vowed they would be around for another party. Sarah, whose married name was Hampton, danced a spry jig at the 99th birthday party which the sisters’ “baby brother,” Daniel, 94, of Mount Vernon, Ind., was unable to attend. Mattie, whose married name was Peale, now is blind and generally bedridden. But age and adversity have not affected her cheerfulness. Attendants reported she sings “Good Morning to You” when they enter her room. The girls were born on a farm near Mount Vernon Feb. 10, 1866.

Veep Greeted By South Vietnamese SAIGON UPI— Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey arrived in Saigon today with a pledge to wage “a vigorous war” against social and economic ills in Viet Nam. He was shielded by thousands of troops nnH police protecting him from Communist terrorists. The vice president’s White House jetliner touched down at suburban Tan Son Nhut Airport at 4 a.m., EST after a flight across the Pacific from Honolulu. Arriving with Humphrey were South Vietnamese Premier Nguyen Cao Ky, chief of state Hguyen Van Thieu, U. S. Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman and others who attended the Honolulu conference with President Johnson earlier this week. Humphrey received the most elaborate welcome to Saigon in the memory of longtime Western residents, including a 21gun salute from four 155mm howitzers. “My mission is not military,” he told reporters during a 3,-
