Tiger Cubs Down
West Vigo 86-78
Greencastle’s Jim Chadd tossed in 31 points along with Mike Troyer’s 23 to pace the Tiger Cub barrage to a 86-78 West em Indiana Conference victory against West Vigo’s Vikings last Saturday night.. The Cubs have dropped only one game in the conference and that was to Garfield. Only one more game is slated in the WIC for the Tiger Cubs and the Greencastle crew will play that one at home against Guerstmeyer next Friday night. Chadd led the Cubs in the first period battle with seven points while the Viking’s Herrington tossed in four field goals for eight points, and the host found themselves leading the Greencastle five by a bucket, 18-16. Troyer combined with the hustling Chadd during the second quarter and routed the buckets for a twenty-four point quarter that gave the Cubs a
40-38 margin. Troyer made good ten of the points while Chadd tossed in six. The third period proved to be the deciding quarter as the topsy- turvey score changed hands five times in less than five minutes with Greencastle finally managing a 52-50 lead at the 3:03 mark. West Vigo never regained or threatened the Cubs during the rest of the contest as Greencastle tossed in 23 points during the third and fourth quarters. The Vikings met foul trouble during the late minutes of the game when three boys had four fouls and one player out of the game with five. The Cubs dumped in 32 for 87 attempts from the field for a .360 percentage while the Vikings popped in an even better .450 percentage with 31 of 68 tries. Rebounds also went to the Greencastle squad, 50-40.
Chadd and Troyer dumped in 31 and 28 respectively while Churchill made good a 12 point effort for Greencastle. West Vigo’s Monts popper in 26 as teammates Rhyan, and Waters tossed in 18 and 13 points. Summaries: B-game:: West Vigo, Greencastle 45

Clovers Trounce
Needmore. 81-51
By FRANK PUCKETT, JR. Banner Sports Editor Once-beaten Cloverdale broke a tight ball game wide open in the third quarter of action last Saturday night and went ahead to blast 15-1 Needmore for their second loss of the season, 81-51. Needmore had lost only once during the season, to a Greene County team, and held the identical record as the Clovers. The Clovers played a strategic contest during the first two periods—the same as Needmore. Both teams fired only the good shots and held the errors down to the closing minutes of the half. Greencastle Seventh Grade Team Wins 4-Way Tourney
St. Joe found everything rosey at the beginning and at the end, but in between the Tigers put on the bite and raced off with seven matches and the meet, 35-10. Heavyweight Ralph Larsen and 123-pounder Steve Ross were the only Tigers to lose. Ross was pinned in 2:50 and Larsen, tripped up and pinned when he thought the referee had halted the action, was pinned in 2:11. It was between these sole setbacks that the Tigers made hay. John Ferguson, 130, pinned John Kehrin in 7:41; 145-pound-er Tom Newman pinned George Lathrop in 8:50; Fred Wedelboe, at 160, spilled Lee Menard in just 2:10; and Steve Nice, DePauw’s 167-pound entry, pinned Tony Calabriese, in 4:32.

Cloverdale connected on 14 for 30 shots for a .469 percentage during the half and a sparkling 33 for 63 shots from the field overall for an even .500. Needmore tossed in 9 for 22 shots the first half and 16 of

DePauw’s mystifying Tigers absorbed their third consecutive 30-point plus defeat here Saturday night. It was another ICC foe who was the culprit, Ball State’s .548 shooting Cardinals, 106-72. Only ray of hope that showed through the unexpected gloom was the winning work of the Tiger frosh. The yearling, on the double work of Dave Browning (23), Jimmy Jackson (16), Tom McCormick (12) and Tim Wills (12), whipped Ball State, 78-74. It was the first home game for the frosh and their third favorable verdict in five cases. Next test comes here Feb. 16 against Indiana State. The varsity, on the other hand, slipped below .500 for the first time since the first game of the season. The mark now is 8- 9 with St. Joheph’s, recent ten point conqueror of Ball State, due in here Wednesday night. Though the odds were against it, it happened at Bowman to the Tigers Saturday. Ball State had its hottest 40 minutes of its 9- 12 season and DePauw was at its coldest (.316). It was icy .235 firing in the first 20 minutes that drove the losers into a hole they never were able to swim out of. State jumped out of a 20-18 edge with four consecutive baskets and dashed ahead at intermission, 46-29. DePauw got within seven points eight minutes before the half ended, but the Cards flew right out of sight a few seconds later. Failure to hit a basket in the laost 5:15 of the first half I didn’t exactly help the Tigers' close the gap. Not even Coach Elmer McCall’s halftime lecture during 15 minutes out of the line of fire helped the Tigers. One of Dan Schermer’s two baskets alle vening matched John Miller’s opening baskets as the last half began, but the Tigermobile went dead quickly thereafter. State’s deft guard Mike Shumaker fired in a free throw to make it 49-31, and then the Cards blitzed their hosts with five consecutive field goals. About the only cheers stunned Tiger fans got off in the final 20 minutes cam* on the
work of 6-6 sophomore center Tom McGurk and the belated spurt by Stan Bahler. In a 4-21 stretch between 10:55 and 6:34 the Covington Battler wheeled and tipped his on top, 86-60. At any rate, the much help though, and what he did get came from diminutive Jack Hogan who was tossing in three. The Tigers were still trailing, 79-57, after McGurk’s
rally.
By the time Bahler started making his move there was only five minutes left and State was on top, 88-60, At any rate, the Wabash senior who had had only five points in his last two games, started looking like himself again. He contributed DePauw’s final 12 points on five baskets and two free throws. Ball State, over the same stretch added 16 including the 100th and 101st on Dave Hutch’s 20 foot one-hand-er with 1:13 to play. The game that State coach
squad which out-rebounded th# Tigers, 60-38. Tom McGurk paced DePauw with a game high of 20 points. Bahler finished with 19, Hogan had 13, and Morgan Everson, hitting only three of 17 shots, had 10. Everson did have 14 rebounds, as many as McGurk and Bahler put together. DePauw committed 16 errors in the game; Ball State made 10.
