West led the ace of diamonds, and continued with a diamond when East signaled with the nine. Declarer won in dummy with the king of diamonds and returned the jack of spades. East played low but stepped up with the ace of spades on the next round of trumps. After some thought. East Shifted to

the queen of hearts.

Declarer won with the ace of hearts, drew the last trump cashed his high riiawiomu, TV+n

he led a club, with the contract hinging on his play from the

dummy.

West had shown up with nothing in spades, with only the king-jack of hearts and with the ace of diamonds. South decided that West needed the ace of clubs for the opening bid; he therefore played the king of clubs from dummy. Down one. BOLD BIDDER South’s reasoning wasn’t senseless, but it also wasn’t safe. Since West was a bold bidder he might well have opened the bidding without the ace

of clubs.

South could be quite sure that East had started with only two diamonds, that Blast wanted a diamond ruff and that Blast knew where the ace of clubs was. When Shut took the ace of trumps, why didn’t he lead a club in the hope of getting a diamond ruff from his partner? There could be only one answer to this question. Blast had the ace of clubs himself and therefore knew that there was no way to get the lead to his partner. This answer would show South how to play the clubs to make his contract.
