SO GOES HOOSIER BASKETBALL...

UPl's Top State Choice Is Routed By Unranked Team INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The [ The other two members of

Indiana high school basketball ratings by the UPI coaches’ board appear headed for an-

the “Big 10” in the ratings who saw action Friday night had things a bit more difficult. In-

Paced by a twenty-eight point effort by high scoring Mike Troyer, the Greencastle Tiger Cubs tucked away their fourteenth win of the hardwood season last night as they trimmed their host Linton, 91-67. Troyer connected on ten field goals and eight free throws during the contest to tally two points over his season average. Greencastle threw their press into high gear early in the first quarter after they had tossed in a 7-0 lead. Churchill did his bit and lead the team during the first period by stealing the ball twice on the press and scoring six points. The Cubs took the eight-minute break holding a 20-8 margin. A balanced attack from Churchill, Troyer, Ross and Jones gave the Cubs a 42-28 half time margin when the Greencastle crew connected on only nine of twenty-four from the field and four for eight from the line. Linton’s Miners hit on 8-22 from the field and a better than the Cubs 4-6 from the line, but the visiting Cubs outscored them in the quarter 22-20. Greencastle had little trouble in the third period of action as Troyer and Ross combined for sixteen of the twenty-four points scored, but they still had trouble connecting from the field with only 9-24. Fortunately Linton had the same trouble and hit only 6-18. Up until the last three minutes of the contest the Cubs had committed only three errors in the game, but they ended up with a total of ten while Linton was charged with 14 floor errors. Greencastle shot a clean .400 percentage from the field with

36 for 90 while Linton popped in 26 for 83 shots for a .319 per' centage. From the line the Cubs dropped in 20 points to Linton’s 15. In a 25-point spurt that came the last quarter it was Pete Norris who sparkled for the Cubs. The sophomore took command of the action and dumped in 7 of the first 13 points scored in the quarter plus grabbing off four rebounds. Brackmeyre paced the scoring with 21 points while teammates Duncan and Newsom tossed in 12 and 10 apiece for the Miners. Greencastle was led by Troyer while Churchill donated 12, Chadd 11, and Ross 10 points. The Cubs will hit the road again tonight as they travel to Terre Haute to tangle with West Vigo. Roachdale came close last night as they cut a fifteen point lead to five with 32 seconds remaining in the contest, but thoughts of victory died when Wells tossed in four free throws and captured a Big Four Conference win from the Hawks, 82-73. Playing without the badlyneeded assistance of Clones was a big handicap for the small Hawks. Clones averages around 17 points per game. Roachdale tipped the .338 percentage from the field hitting 26 for 67 attempts to better the 24 for 60 shots by the Wells crew, but the visiting conference foe took the contest at the charity stripe by tossing in 34 of 49 while Roachdale connected on a real respectable 21 of 31. Rebounds also w r ent to the \isiting Wells team as they pulled off 32 to Roachdale’s 17. Roachdale was paced by Hill with 15 points while Snodgrass donated 14 and R. Simpson 11. Scott tossed in 26 for Wells as Hannis, Russell, and Robinson hit for 16, 14 and 12 points. The / Clovers jumped into a 24-5 first period lead and didn’t budge the rest of the contest as they held a 41-19 half time margin and 63-30 third quarter command. Desert Classic In Fourth Round PALM, Calif. UPI—The field took off after Harold (Catfish) Kneece and defending champion Billy Casper today in the fourth round of the 90-hole $100,000 Bob Hope Desert Golf Classic. Kneece held the lead after three rounds with an 11-under-par total of 205, while Casper was just two strokes behind at

nine-under-par 207.

Don Massengale was at five-under-par 211, one stroke ahead of Arnold Palmer, who shot an even-par 36 on the front nine at Bermuda Dunes Friday, and closed strong for a 71 that put him in good position to make a run at the top in the final two rounds of this marathon desert carnival which will be televised nationally today and Sunday

(NBC).

PGA champion Dave Marr was another stroke behind in a big group tied at 213, while Ken Venturi was tied with six others

at 215.

It was anything but an easy battle for the Fillmore team as they could only manage a 17-16 first period margin. Pittsboro's fired up rally in the second quarter downed the Cards by seven, 39-32, but they came back in the third period to lead by five, 55-50. Big 6-8 Wayne Bright went the first quarter without a personal foul, but in the last three minutes of the second period he was called for three quick fouls that slowed him down. DePauw, Ball State To Match Losing Streaks Tonight

A couple of good ball clubs in the midst of bad losing streaks gather tonight at 8 p. m. in Bowman Gymnasium to improve their lot. Who goes home happy—Ball State or DePauw—depends on the game’s outcome, of course. DePauw, for only the fifth time in 17 games, will have the home court advantage, and for the Tigers it adds up to a precioua asset.

They have whipped Illinois Wesleyan, Wheaton and Valparaiso at home, losing only to Evansville, 95-93. The Cardinals whipped tonight’s hosts when they confronted each other in Muncie Jan. 5, 89-77. The Tigers shot only .385 in that loosely played contest and with the Cards, committed nearly 30 errors. Since that game Ball State has dropped seven consecutive

tilts, including five in the ICC where they are 2-5, plus games to Eastern Illinois and top ranked Southern Illinois, 69-50. Last Saturday night, while Depauw was swallowing a 11071 pasting at Valpo, the Cards were having almost as bad luck down at Rensselaer. The Pumas were up 30 points at one time, 83-53 and finally won 100-90. DePauw gets to St. Joe here Wednesday.

DePauw’s current losing streak isn’t as long — three games — but the size of the last two deficits is enough to spread over seven games. The Tigers dumped Lake Forest, 94-69 15 days ago, slipped to Evansville five days later then went into deep slumber while being bombed by Butler, 107-63, and by Valpo. . Before the hopefully rejuvenated 8-8 Tigers swing into ac-

tion hometown patrons will get their first look at what has been considered DePauw’s best freshman talent in a number

of years.

Winners of half their four games, the yearlings have only an overtime loss to Butler and a nine - point whipping by Indiana State against them. Four of Coach Ed Meyer’s starters — Tom McCormick, Jimmy Jackson, Dava Brown-

ing and Tim Wills — all are In

double figures.

Browning, co-captain of Anderson High School’s 22-3 team last year, threw in 32 points in leading his teammates to their most recent win, 87-82, over Valparaiso Wednesday. Tipoff time for the frosh

game is 6 p. m.
