TIGER CUBS DOWN WILEY IN WIC GAME
Fourth Quarter Surge Gives Cubs 10 Point Edge, 73-63
By FRANK PUCKETT, JR. Banner Sports Editor Greencastle’s rallying Tiger Cubs avenged a Western Indiana Conference loss to Garfield last week by knocking off rival and host Terre Haute Wiley in the uptown gym last night, 73-63. The Cubs are 4-1 in the conference now while the loss was Wiley’s second. Cub mentor Dave McCracken went the biggest part of the contest without his right hand man Jim Chadd, but the uncanny third year coach used nine men to run the Wiley Red Streaks off the hardwood. A ragged first period found both teams trying to find the range at the bucket with the score standing at 5-8 Wiley with forty seconds remaining before the buzzer. Troyer got hot for the Tiger Cubs and blasted a couple of quick ones that closed the quarter with the Cubs leading 9-8. Greencastle tallied on 4 of 15 from the field and 1-4 from the charity stripe during the ragged quarter while Wiley did even worse with 4-21 from the field and 0-3 from the line. Conference power Wiley came back in the second period hitting at the .500 clip when they tossed in 8-16 as the Cubs dumped in 6-19. Wiley pivot man, 6-3 Rankin, led the Red Streaks in a short rally that put the Cubs under 15-11 in the opening minutes of the second quarter. At that point in the ball game McCracken called on Chadd for help. And help he did as the hustlers pulled off two rebounds, scored two field goals, and stole the ball within thirty
seconds after he entered the game. Chadd also put the Cubs back within one, 16-15, but the Red Streaks refused to be tied down and ran up a 29-22 lead. Once again it was Chadd who dumped in a couple of quick ones seconds before the halftime buzzer sounded and the Cubs trailed only by three, 29-26. Battling it out without the able assistance of Chadd, the Troyer led crew fought their way back to within two at the 5:18 mark, 35-33. Churchill found the range on the next play as Jones swiped the ball downcourt and fired to him under the basket. It was a seesaw battle for the next three minutes as both teams fired away until Wiley gained a five point edge with 1:09 remaining. At that point Chadd fired up again and dumped in two quick baskets and a steal that made it 48-47 in favor of Wiley. Wiley’s Hubbard dropped in a long one on the next trip down the floor, but Surber did it for the Cubs with a long one hander from the corner. The third period ended with Wiley in command by the slim margin of one, 50-49. It was all Troyer’s game from the buzzer as the little hot-shot tucked in seven free throws and four field goals, 15 of his 34 points, in the eight minute period. Troyer dropped a shot from the line to make it 50-50 and fifteen seconds later he made it 52-50 Cubs with a ten foot jumper. Wiley’s Rankin bumped shoulders on the next play and not only got a field goal, but a charity stripe attempt for a three point play. Nanovsky made his bid next with a couple of free throws, Rankin kept pace with short jumper, and
Troyer bottled another one. With the Cubs in close command of the see-saw battle; 56-55-, Greencastle’s Pete Norris was called for his fifth personal. As Norris left the game Rankin dumped in two free throws, Harmless came back with a bucket, and Troyer took the hint by hitting on two consecutive long ones and the Cubs found themselves in the lead 62-57. Wiley tried to redeem themselves, but the hot-handed Troyer led the fired up Greencastle crew to the 73-63 lead. Greencastle only connected with 25 of 70 from the field for a low shooting percentage of .359, but the difference came when the local five hit a .639 clip from the line with 23 of 36 ft-ee throws. Wiley shot just a little under the Cubs with 25-74 from the field for a .331 percentage and .456 from the line with 13-29. Troyer dumped in 34 points while Chadd managed six field goals for 12. Hubbard and Rankin hit on 16 and 12 points for the Wiley cause. Fillmore Cardinals Blast New Sectional Entry, 67 - 48
Fillmore made it 15-3 for the season last night as they chalked up North Salem on their own floor, 67-46. The Cards had little trouble with the new Sectional entry as they pasted them for a 12-9 low scoring first quarter lead, 31-22 second period margin, and 51-32 third period lead. Mentor Darrell Hoyer pulled the biggest part of his regulars during the entire last quarter and let his bench sum the game up. Jones and Peters lead the attack for the North Salem crew with 18 and 12 points respectively while Bright and Glaze tossed in 19 and 16 points for the Cardinals. Summaries: Fillmore (67) FG FT PF

V. . *• Roachdale Hawks Sail By Bees Of Russellville In 77-48 Contest
Greencastle’s Mike Troyer dumps in a high-flying two pointer during the early minutes of last night’s game with Wiley. Troyer scored 34 points in the contest.
Russellville grabbed a quick 8-3 lead on their host Roachdale last night and the Hawks blasted away for 13 straight points, hit the Bees with their press, and went on to chalk up their eighth victory in fifteen starts, 77-48. The Hawks played without the valuable assistance of Clones, who bangs around 17 points per game. The hustling forward injured his knee during warm-up prior to the game. Roachdale clipped a low .393 percentage from the field but the Bees hit an even lower percentage of .272. The Hawks banged 24 for 61 and Russellville hit 15 for 55. The Hawks clearly made their intentions on the boards as they out-rebounded their guests 53-25. Doreff snatched 12, Hatfield 10, Snodgrass 8, Hill 8, and Collings 7 rebounds. Russellville’s top man, Ron Richardson, dropped out of the contest late in the fourth quarter with his fifth personal, but not before tossing in six field goals and one free throw for 13 points. Roachdale, led by Paul Hill’s j 15 for 16, dropped in 29 for 30 free throws while Russellville connected on 18 of 29 from the line. Hill has the fantastic season total of 75 for 90 free throws, an .831 percentage. The Hawks led at all stops 20-11 the first, 41-25 the second, and 56-35 the third. Hill paced the scoring with 23 points as Doreff and D. Simpson tossed in 10 and 15 points respectively. McGaughey played second to Richardson’s

DePauw To Face Butler Bulldogs Tonight
With little time to enjoy the fact they nearly upset the nation’s number six small college outfit, DePauw’s Tigers tackle another toughie tonight in Indianapolis. Tipoff time for the ICC bout in Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse is 8 p. m. A preliminary scramble pits the two colleges’ frosh teams at 6 p.m. Indianapolis radio station WFBM will be in the stands to report the varsity action, beginning at 7:50. Barring any complications, DePauw, 8-6 for the campaign, plans to stick with the starting five that slipped before Evansvilfe Wednesday, 95-93.
That would be 6-3 Morgan Everson and 6-3 Stan Bahler, 6-6 Tom McGurk, and guards Dan Schermer, 5-9, and 5-6 Jack Hogan. Bahler apparently sailed through the Evansville game without any serious after effects. Coach Elmer McCall thought the quiet man from Wabash’s injury bothered his eye more than his foot. Bahler ordinarily blasts the nets at a .500 plus clip anywhere within a 12-foot radius of the buckets. But they wouldn’t fall in Wednesday even though he fired from good advantage at every angle, rolling up a season high of 20 attempts. He hit six
for .300. About Bahler’s condition yesterday McCall said Bahler has had some shin splints, mostly as a result of not having had much practice. "I think it’s a matter now of conditioning it. His foot took a lot of jarring on the hard floor Wednesday night and it’s still a little sore,” he said. The Tigers have been paced during the year by Everson’s 18.8 average, but it has been tiny Jack Hogan who has led the team in the past three games. Hogan, 13.7 scorer, has had 24, 20, and 22 against St. Joe, Lake Forest and Evansville. His opposite, Dan Schermer, finally
back on the beam after picking up only 22 points in a 7-game stretch, has averaged 16 points in the last two games. McGurk generally throws in around 10 and Bahler has been good for 15.6 in 13 games. Butler comes into the game inactive since January 15 when it nudged Ball State at Muncie, 75 to 71. Only Coach Tony Hinkle has been active. He has been on the banquet circle, picking up personal honors at a ‘‘Take Time for Tony” feat Thursday. Keys in the Butler attack are 6-6 junior center Ed Schilling. The Cleveland product is averaging 20.6 through Butters’ 3-2
ICC showing. Well behind him but still in double figures have been 6-5 forward Lon Showley and 5-11 “utility” guard Gene Milner. Both have been bagging a dozen per game. Hinkle’s three other starters, 6-3 forward Ron Salatich, Hogan’s one-time teammate at Broad Ripple, 6-0 guard Jim Petty, and playmakeS^jguard 5-10 Larry Shade, all are just below 10 ppg. In the ICC, in addition to beating Ball State, Butler has lost to Valparaiso and Evansville on the road and whipped Indiana State and St. Joseph’s at home. DePauw upset Butler in Inla-* on_sa
