Pick Best Finesse Against King-Jack By Alfred Sheinwold In some situations most players either take the wrong finesse or don’t finesse at all. The correct play depends on the fact that your opponents are made of flesh and blood. If that lost to the jack, you would return to dummy for another finesse. With nine trumps in the combined hands, most players believe in leading out the ace and then leading a low trump toward dummy. This loses when

West started with the singleton 3 or 2, and also when either opponent has all four trumps. You can get better results if you begin the trumps by leading the six from your hand. If West plays low (or shows out), you plan to let the six ride as a finesse. If you lose to the jack, you plan to return to dummy with a club and lead the queen through for a finesse. USUALLY WORKS This play works when West started with a singleton, as in today’s hand. It works equally well when West has started with K-J-x or if either opponent has all four trumps. It works for any 2-2 break, but loses when East has started with the singleton jack. The play does not lose when West holds K-3 or K-2 of trumps because West will play his king for fear of losing It. West might have nerve enough to play low if you led the ten because he might guess your plan, but he assumes you are going to put up dummy’s queen when you lead the six. To sum up, the recommended line of play loses in only one case. Leading the ace out fifrst would lose in four cases. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one spade,

and the next player passes. You hold: S-K J 3 H-K 9 8 4 3 DJ 9 4 C-8 6. What do you say? ANSWER: Bid two spades. The hand is not quite strong enough for a response of two hearts. If partner can rebid after your simple raise, you will accept any invitation to game.

Skive Wages SAN FRANCISCO UPI—Police estimated Thursday that thieves worked at least six hours to burglarize a local playground office. The office door was smashed, bolts on lockers were ripped off, desks were pried open and a one-ton safe was overturned, its bottom drilled open and a concrete slab underneath hacked through. Damage was put at $600. The loot was $23.50.
