Proposes Legislation For Viet War Draftees

WASHINGTON UPI — Sen. Ernest Gruentng, D-Alaska, proposed legislation Tuesday to forbid sending draftees to Viet Nam against their will without specific congressional approval. The Alaska Democrat was Joined by Sen. Wayne L. Morse, D-Ore., a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in sponsoring the proposal. The ban was offered in the form of amendments to legislation to provide more money and more economic aid authority for South Viet Nam. Gruening and Morse axe two of the leading critics of U. 8. policies in Viet Nam. Gruening said he had planned a similar amendment to the defense money bill last August but held off at President Johnson’s urging.

However, Gruening said, the President “said that if we were not out of Viet Nam by January, I would be free to do anything I pleased.” He said “mors than five months have now elapsed. We are still bogged down in an undeclared war in Viet Nam which threatens to escalate into a third world war and the price of which in any event in lives and other costs would he staggering.” Gruening said enlistees had no recourse but to go where they are ordered. But an entirely different situation prevails when we reach into millions of American families and conscript these youths to fight involuntarily in this hopeless mess,” he said.

'Drowned' Man Comes To Life SUVA, Fiji UPI—A policeman here was understandably startled when a “drowned man” he was taking to the morgue suddenly sat up. “Where are you taking me?” asked the “corpse,” a Figian named Amaraki Kata. ‘T have done nothing wrong.” Kata had been carried down by cramps while swimming in a river. It was some time before his “body” was found, and it did not respond to mouth-to-mouth respiration. The “remains” were placed in the back of a police jeep for the trip to the morgue, but the bumpy ride over a backwoods road revived Kata.

School Boses Use Headlights FRANKLIN UPI — Many Johnson County school children today rode to classes in school

buses with headlights shining brightly throughout the trip under a new rule passed Monday night by the United School System board. Supt, Harold Hibbs said the board members decided to adopt the new policy Monday night as a measure to prevent accidents. “We believe this plan will be an effective accident preventive measure,” he said. At the same time, Capt. S. R. Wasson, director of the Indiana State Police motor carrier inspection division, hailed the move as the first of its type in Indiana. Wasson said he felt the system would “help very much and I would like to see it used throughout the state.” He charged the state’s 1939 law concerning headlights was “obsolete” and added the Greyhound Bus Co. had found the practice reduces accidents considerably. Hie present law specifies that headlights should be turned on a half-hour before sunset and may be turned off 30 minutes before dawn.
