BAINBRIDGE SWEEPS CO. TOURNEY
By RANK PUCKETT, JR. Ha—rr Sports Editor Hard-hitting and fast breaking Bainbridge baled the Clover rilht off a M-gamo winning
streak and forced defending county tourney champs Cloverdale to bow out with a 79-73 hardwood upset in the final game of the Putnam County Tournament last Saturday night.
Cloverdale got through two rounds of the tourney knocking off Russellville on Thursday night and Fillmore Saturday afternoon. Bainbridge had to rout Roachdale Saturday after-
noon for their championship bid. Cloverdale got off to a characteristic slow start and the Pointers didn’t wait around for the undefeateds to warm up. They grabbed a 6-8 lead at the
gun and fought off a Clover rally in the closing minutes of the quarter to claim a 17-13 first stop lead. The fast breaking Pointers jumped to a quick 22-13 early lead in the second quarter only
to have hot-shots Price and Jones come back with six consecutive points to make it 24-all at 3:29. Bainbridge lost the ball out-of-bounds on the next trip down the hardwood and hustler Hervey, who had a rough time rolling in the tourney, put the Clovers in the lead with a fivefoot hook shot, 26-24. It was nip and tuck for the next three minutes until Hervey and Sandy combined for a couple of quick ones that gave the Clovers a 36-29 dominate edge at half-time. Cloverdale connected on a surprising 17 of 36 from the field during the first half and on 2 of 6 free throws while Bainbridge hit on 13 of 34 tries from the field and 3 of 7 charity stripe attempts. Bainbridge used their fast breaking tactics to catch the Clovers as Steele pulled off a rebound and fired it full court to an awaiting Judy who tipped it up and put the Pointers in command once more 38-37. Sandy came back with a fifteen footer for the Clovers, but Stallcop was caught for shoving McFarland on the play. McFarland dumped in a free throw and it stood 39-all at 4:51. John Price, who had guided the Clovers all through the tourney, rambled in a high flying jumper to give his team a two point lead 41-39 and the Clovers went into a pressing defensive. But the Pointers took advantage of the defensive and came back to take the lead as Pointer McFarland made good a 3-point effort in the closing seconds. The Pointers held the leading margin of two at the quarter end, 56-54. Cloverdale started off on the wrong foot as the fourth and final period began by throwing

INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The mortality rate had caught up today with all but four Indiana high school basketball teams heading into the final month of the regular season. Brookville, which clouted Knightstown Saturday night, 71-40, for its 15th victory, heads the perfect-record list. Montpelier and Whiteland are 14-game winners and Garrett has won 13 in a row. Montpelier laced Lancaster Central, 104-77, in its latest effort, Larry Holloway hooping 40 points and Gerald Bolling adding 31. But Cloverdale’s 14-game string ran out against Bainbridge in the final game of the Putnam County tourney, 78-73. Fourth-rated New Albany was the only other first-time loser last week, getting caught by upset-minded Evansville Reitz. State champ Indianapolis Washington, No. 2 in last week’s UPI coaches’ board' ratings, was the only “Big 10” loser Saturday night, bowing to Howe, 78-72, in the finals of the city tourney. That clipped a 12game winning streak for the Continentals, who had lost previously only to top-rated South Bend Central, which romped over Penn, 95-57. South Bend’s Bears and Anderson, No. 3 in the state, collide in Saturday's inter sectional headliner. Both have lost only twice and Anderson trimmed neighbor Madison Heights Saturday, 75-66, for its ninth consecutive win. Anderson’s defending champs also have a North Central Conference date at Kokomo Friday while the South Benders play Bowler Fires 300 LANSING, Mich. UPI—Don Johnson, Kokomo,. Ind., rolled the 17th perfect 300-game in Silver Anniversary All - Star Bowling tourney history Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough to get him into the top eight places. Johnson’s perfect score was only the second 300 rolled on the opening day of action in the tourney, but it came in a 1,033 series, leaving him far down in the standings. Veteran Bob Strampe of Detroit set a torrid opening round pace with a 1,221 total, far ahead of Bill Allen, Orlando, Fla* in second place with 1,144.

Other top conference scraps Friday include New Albany at Evansville Central in the Southern Conference, Gary Froebel at Hammond Tech in the Northwest, GerstmeyerGarfield at Terre Haute and Terre Haute Wiley at Greencastle in the Western, and LaPorte at Michigan City in the NIHSC. The NCC and NIHSC hook up in two other games Saturday— Logansport at LaPorte and Muncie Central at Michigan City. Muncie, its 3-12 record the Bearcats’ worst in many years, gave fifth-rated East Chicago Washington a battle royal Saturday before bowing, 59-58. New Albany rebounded from its loss at Reitz by besting Seymour Saturday, 69-63; sixthseeded Gary Roosevelt rolled over South Bend Adams, 78-58, and No. 7 Evansville Harrison toyed with Owensville, 95-52. Champion Attica and runnerup Loogootee St. John’s led the advance into this weekend’s 8team finals of the 50th annual Wabash Valley tourney at Terre Haute.

Red Wings Take League Lead ty United Prtt> International The Detroit Red Wings usually are considered an old team but they’ve opened up a fourpoint first-place lead in the National Hockey League with the help of 22-year-old Paul Henderson and 23-year-old Roger Crozier. With veteran teammates Gordie How and Bill Gadsby beaming their support, Henderson scored his eighth game-winning goal of the season and Crozier turned in another superlative performance in the nets Sunday night to pace the Red Wings to a 5-1 victory over the New York Rangers. The win extended the Red Wings’ unbeaten string to nine games — marred only by a tie with the Rangers on Jan. 15 — and gave them a four-point lead over the second-place Chicago Black Hawks and Montreal Canadiens who played a 33 tie Sunday. The Boston Bruins beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 2-1, in Sunday’s other game to stretch the'ir winning streak to three games. The Black-Hawks and Canadiens remained tied for second place when Bobby Hull’s 38th goal of the season at 9:04 of the third period produced Sunday’s deadlock. The Black Hawks had taken a 2-0 lead on goals by Stan Mikita and Pat Stapleton but Henry Richard, Ralph Backstrom and Claude Larose scored in the second period to put the Canadiens in front, 3-2. Second - period goals by Pit Martin and Murray Oliver enabled the Bruins to move to within two points of the fifthplace Rangers. The three-game streak matches the Bruins’ longest In six and a half seasons. Tim Horton scored for the Maple Leafs.
Wilt Gets 36 By United Press International Mother Nature and Wilt Chamberlain are two things that you can’t fight, and the Philadelphia 76ers are thankful that both are on their side. The 76ers, fighting for the top spot in the National Basketball Association’s eastern division, got 36 points and 27 rebounds from Big Wilt Sunday as they defeated the St.. Louis Hawks, 104-98, after a snowstorm postponed the scheduled game between the league-lead-ing Boston Celtics and the San Francisco Warriors.
away two passes. The Pointers made good on the mistakes and grabbed a 60-54 lead. Following the pattern dominate in the game, Cloverdale rambled their way back with the efforts of Price and Hervey, to within one, 59-60. At 5:09 Stallcop fouled out with his fifth personal and the Cloven called time. At the stop, Bainbridge mentor Pat Rady substituted Sutherlin into the line-up. Sutherlin set the pace by firing away nine seconds after he entered the game to put the Pointen In command by three, 62-59. The score board swayed In favor of both teams for the next two minutes until McFarland stepped to the line at 1:57. The little guard hit one of his free throw attempts but missed the second one. Steele grabbed off the rebound and put the ball back up for a 3-point play. The Pointers now led, 73-69. The Clovers lost the ball on the next play and Steele again hit making it 75-69 at 1:03. Cloverdale missed three free throw attempts in the remaining seconds and hit on four to make it 73-75, but Bainbridge’s Sutherlin topped the cake with icing when he flung in the last shot of the game with six seconds to give the Pointers their championship. Bainbridge hit a combined 34 of 68 attempts from the field for an even .500 while the Clovers managed only 12 for 41 the last half for a low 29 of 77 shots from the field. Jones donated 26 points for the Clovers while teammates Hervey and Price added 19 and 13 points. McFarland did it for the Pointers with 18 points and was followed elose by Steele and Rossok with 16 and 17 points.
Fillmore Bows Out
Cloverdale secured their second round victory from the Fillmore Cardinals, but not without a fight. Fillmore, paced by 6-9 Wayne Bright jumped into a quick 102 lead over the Pointers with Bright scoring seven of the ten points. Clover John Price connected on his second basket of the game with three minutes gone in the quarter and the Clovers were down 10-4. Before the first period ended Price and Jones had combined to lead their team to a trailing 16-15 margin. Fillmore’s fired up crew got off with a bang again in, the early minutes of the second period as Bun ten and Bright sparked their Cardinal teammates to a 37-31 half time lead. During the cold second quarter the Clovers missed 11 charity stripe attempts while Fillmore missed on six tries. Cardinal hustler Goodpasture also put the hex on Cloverdale’s Rod Hervey during the first half of the ball game by allowing the hot-shot only one bucket. The shot came with twentyseconds remaining in the second period. Hervey only connected on four field goals the entire game compared to his usual 24-plus average. The rallying Clovers blistered the nets in the opening minutes of third period and Truax and Stallcop led their team to a 38-38 tie at the 6:30 mark. The Cards called an abrupt time-out in the procession just as Sandy tossed in a free throw to give the Clovers the edge, 39-38. Stallcop and Truax continued
the bombradment and before Fillmore could get their breath the Clovers commanded the game, 50-40. Glaze chucked in a couple of quickies in an effort to get the Cards back on their feet, but before the hustler could get the ball rolling the official called him for shoving. It was the 6-4 Cardinal ace player’s fifth foul and he left the game with 1:25 in the third period remaining. Taking no time for lax, Glaze’s replacement Bunten, steam rolled the Clovers all alone during the next few minutes. The 5-10 senior swiped the ball twice and scored three times, the last shot coming with 19 seconds remaining to tie the score at 54-54. For six minutes of the tough fourth quarter it was nip and tuck for both teams until Cloverdale called time out with 2:33 showing on the clock. Forty seconds after action resumed Bright dumped in his 31st point of the contest to put the Cardinals within two of the leading Clovers, 70-72. Cardinal Jackson and Bunten slipped up on the next two plays by fouling Hervey and Coon who made it 75-70 in favor of the Clovers. In a desperate attempt to come back in the closing minutes Fillmore’s Jackson lost the ball twice and the Cards bowed out. Price tossed in 25 points before fouling out in the last quarter while Sandy and Hervey donated 14 and 12 points. Bright paced all scorers with 31 points. Teammates Glaze and Bunten added 13 and 9 points respectively.
Roachdale Tripped by Champs
It wasn’t all roses for the champion Pointers as they found out when they tangled with the Roachdale Hawks for the third time this year. The Pointers tripped up the Hawks for a 75-56 victory In the second round of the tourney. Rossok dumped in a fadeaway jumper for the first two points of the game and the Pointers jumped into a 6-0 lead. They added a couple more before two minutes had passed and the Hawks had not scored. With 5:53 on the clock the Hawks finally scored and managed eight more before the quarter terminated to trail the Pointers 9-18. Hill, Clones, and Callings banged the Hawks back to scaring distance with a 22-24 difference at 3:08. The Pointers called time out and came back blasting and brought their lead to four, 32-28. Clones, Roachdale’s number one asset, put the Hawks with-
in two when he dumped in a couple of free throws, 30-32, but before he could get his pals rolling, Rossok made it big with a 3-point play. The score stood 35-30, Bainbridge. Clones dumped in another one and the Hawks hit the Pointers with the press, but Bainbridge took advantage of the press and rolled up the points with their fast breaking tactics for a 55-40 third period lead. Roachdale fell to the wayside in the final fourth as the Pointers chalked up 19 points to their 16. Clones was the big man in scoring for the Hawks with 24 points while Steele and Judy hit 19 and 18 for the Pointers.
