PUyinf Too Carefully May Cost You The Hand By Alfred Sheinwold

Careful bridge players bring to mind the distinction between the careful and the careless girt. When you take her out to dinner, the careful girl loses only one of her gloves. The careful bridge player draws only one round too many of trumps.

South took the ace of hearts and drew tiro rounds of trumps with Ms own see and dummy’s ten. He then abandoned trumps, bat it was already too late. Declarer tiled a finesse with Hie jack of chibs, losing to the queen. West returned a heart to the queen, and Beat shot bade a third trump. South cashed the ace of dubs, dropping the king, and then led a diamond, losing dummy’s king to the aee. Back came a diamond to the queen, and

South could ruff a heart in dummy to discard a diamond on the ten of dubs. This was the end of the road. South still had a losing diamond and could do nothing with It Down one. START CLUBS South should start the dubs at the second trick, losing to the queen. West’s best defense is to return a trump. South cashes the ace of dubs and leads a diamond to force out the ace. East returns a second trump. Declarer wins in dummy with the ten and ruffs a low club with the ace of trumps so that he can then lead Hie jack of trumps to dummy’s queen. South can discard two diamonds on the ten and seven of dubs and can eventually ruff a heart with dummy’s last trump to make the contract. Declarer can afford to draw one round of trumps at the beginning of the play provided that he stays in dummy to start the dubs next. Drawing two rounds of trumps looks like a careful play, but actually costs declarer his contract DAILY QUESTION As dealer, you hold: S-A K J 5 H-J 9 3 D-Q 6 3 2 C-A J. What do you say? ANSWER: Bid one notrump. In standard bidding systems this shows 16 to 18 point in Mgh cards, with balanced distribution and strength in at least three suits.
