7o Hike Interest On Savings Bonds
WASHINGTON UPI — to a move to provide extra funds for the war in Viet Nam and to help fight inflation, the Johnson administration will raise the interest on government savings bonds to make them competitive with private savings institutions. President Johnson Tuesday ordered Treasury Secretary Henry H. Fowler to "set in motion the necessary machinery” for an increase. White House and Treasury officials said the amount had not been decided, but an increase to at least 4 per cent from the present 3.75 per cent was likely. “A successful savings bonds program is of particular urgency at this time — facing as we do a firm commitment to the defense of freedom in Viet Nam and a strongly rising economy at home,” Johnson told Fowler. “We must not, and will not, at this juncture, permit our strength to be sapped by infla-
tion.’
Petition Denied In Murder Case
INDIANAPOLIS UPI — A petition for a writ of habeas corpus for William A. Brown, charged with second - degree murder in the beating death of a Marion County Jail prisoner last summer, was rejected Monday by Marion Criminal Court Judge Saul Rabb. Rabb ruled that the grand jury indictment of Brown must stand until there is proof the jury acted on insufficient evidence. Rabb said there was enough evidence to support the indictment... Brown was charged in the death of Elmer Reagan last Aug. 7, about three weeks after
he was injured while Brown and Reagan were in jail.

Allalfa Weevil Proves Problem
He reported the thefts to police.
LAFAYETTE, — UPI — A Purdue University research entomologist reported today that the alfalfa weevel has become a serious economic problem in countries bordering the Ohio River. Prof. M. Curtis Wilson told an agricultural pesticide conference during Farm Science Days at Purdue that the weevil is “dispersing rapidly and may cover the entire state by the end
of this year.” The weevil first was found in Indiana two years ago in a few counties along the state’s southern border. It spread northward nearly to Indianapolis last year.
The weevil is an early spring insect that feeds on the young alfalfa growth. It first attacks the growing tips of the plant, then strips the leaves. Scientists are studying control because the most effective insecticides are too hazardous for use and the compounds that are used require most frequent application and precise timing.
