Some more of that did you know .... Greencastle’s Mike Troyer leads the Western Indiana Basketball Conference race in the scoring department with a high 26.7 points per game (with the exception of the last night’s Schulte game) .... in three conference games he has 30 field goals, 20 free throws, and 80 points .... an ironic game note to that is .... Dan Harris of Brazil follows Troyer with second place in the conference wtih a 22.3 average

.... Harris dumped in 35 points in the Brazil-Greencastle game and Troyer hit for 40 .... But, did you know that a player in the county from Bainbridge tops Troyer’s output with a 28.9 average and he has played thirteen ball games? His name is Larry Steele, Bainbridge’s hot-handed 6-4 rebounding and scoring ace.

Wiley leads the pack in the Western Conference with 6 wins and no losses while the Cubs trail Gerstmeyer 4-0 with 3 wins (excluding action last night) for third place. West Vigo is fourth, Clinton fifth, and Garfield sixth.

Greencastle’s reserve team is holding down second place in the Same conference. Honey Creek, who holds first spot has a 5-0 conference record while Greencastle is 3-0. Wiley and Garfield follow up with 4-2 and 2-1 records.

This is the first time in about ten years for the Fillmore Cardinals .... they drew the bye in the county tourney . . . . Cloverdale will have a rough route if the hustlers from southern Putnam expect to have a repeat performance of last year . . . . and between me, you, and the typewriter .... I think they are expecting a repeat performance .... Thursday night’s encounter should be hot .... Reelsville’s Indians beat out the Roachdale Hawks, their scheduled opponents in the tourney, by only two points in the opener of the season, 50-48 .... wonder which team has improved the most.... Coach Jim Sheese sorta took a dry look at the Tourney drawing the other night.... do you blame him? .... he drew Cloverdale .... the Clovers have only went undefeated all year long .... but like they say .... “all b-ball players put their pants on the same way.**

A public thawke from me to the Putnam County coaches and of the schools for the delicious dinner and the invitation to join them during the drawing. The meal was delicious and very enjoyable.

There was only one thing .... one of the coaches placed his order for a large T-bone steak well done .... after the drawings he changed his order to soup!

Did you know that .... the six county teams that participate against one another and outside the county have lost only 9 games out of the county .... and they have played 37! Bainbridge hasn’t been beat out of the county .... likewise is the Cloverdale and Fillmore record .... Reelsville has only been beaten once .... Roachdale twice .... and Russellville 5 times .... of course Russellville has played 10 opponents from out of the county .... another point might be made .... out of the 85 games Putnam County team have played (including Greencastle) they have droped only 23 games .... Cloverdale hasn’t lost yet .... Greencastle has lost one contest.... Fillmore has dropped two along with Bainbridge .... Reelsville has been beaten three .... Roachdale seven .... and Russellville eight times .... that’s winning on the whole .729 per cent of the games played .... competition speaks for itself in Putnam County. Editor's Note—AH data taken before January 14 cage action.

Pointers Get 7 In Row

Montezuma — Bainbridge made it number seven in a row last night as they chalked up Montezuma on their own floor 75-54 in a real hotly-contested first two quarters of action.

It was the fourteenth outing for the high-scoring Pointers from North Putnam who have won twelve games this season.

The Pointers brushed off a cold start and grabbed a 17-9 first stop lead over the smaller hustlers, but they were outscored in the second period 2113 and held a 39-30 half time margin.

A hustling defensive unit brought the ball game down to nip-and-tuck fashion in the hot third period. Both teams were pretty evenly matched, scoring 14 and 15 points, but Bainbridge’s height gave them the edge on the rebounds. The Pointers out-rebounded their host 51-35.

A fourth quarter barrage of buckets by Pointers Steele and Rossok plus some assists by guards Judy and McFarland

paid off as the Bainbridge crew

points could

manage only 10.

Steele paced the pack with 32

Terre Haute — Schulte’s Bears felt the mighty claw of the powerful Greencastle Tiger Cubs during the last minutes of the third period last night as they reluctantly gave Greencastle their twelfth consecutive victory of the season, 88-76.

It was a long hard road back for the Greencastle crew as they were trailing by ten when the third period started, 35-45. Chadd donated the first basket of the quarter only to be equalled by Schulte’s Butwin. Then hot-handed Troyer began to show his stuff. The little 5-11 Tiger Cub guard had been colder than usual during the first half of action, but he really set the nets on fire during the Cub rampage. At the 5:48 mark he dropped in a ten footer, bringing the Cubs within ten, 40-50.

It took the Tiger Cub claw only four minutes to clamp the Bears down and outscore them 12-10. Troyer banged two in a row, Nanovsky stole the ball and fired down court to Troyer who dropped another one in on the next play. Harmless committed a personal on the return trip down the hardwood and Schulte’s Butwin hit a couple. With 2:19 remaining in the quarter Churchill banged in the next Cub basket to make it 52-50 Schulte.

Chadd, who had had a rough night of it with close calls and hard knocks, was the man on the next play as the hustler met Schulte’s Trueblood midcourt, robbed him of the ball, and dribbled his way into a fast breaking two points that tied the game at 52-52 all.

Fillmore Cards

Clip Eels, 68-54

Eminence—Fillmore’s Cardinals, who traveled to Eminence last night, overcame a hustling Eel defensive for their tenth season victory after experiencing one of their coldest games of the season, 68-54.

The tall Cards stepped out on the wrong foot with a ragged defensive, but still managed a 22-12 first period lead. They dumped in 20 more in the second period, but could only afford 13 points the third and fourth periods.

couldn’t combat the tall Cards even though the Fillmore visitors hit on an unofficial 4-25 shots from the field in the final quarter of the contest. Bright led the scoring with 29 points while Glaze tossed 17 and Jackson 10 points, for the Cardinals while Eminence was paced by Buis who dropped in 20 points. Golf added 12 points. Fillmore will travel to Avon tonight where they hope to get their number eleven victory.

Nanovsky followed suit by making his second steal of the game and firing down court to Chadd who got one of the most

controversial calls of the season for what was called an offensive foul. But the Bear’s Newlin missed both his charity stripe attempts and Greencastle’s tough Steve Jones grabbed the rebound and dropped in two. Nanovsky then

made his fourth personal of the game and Goldman put Schulte back in the lead 54-52.

With the Cubs trailing Jones took over once more as he dumped in two consecutive buckets while Schulte’s Butwin slipped in one shot. Ten seconds remained in the quarter when Surber and Jones tied up Trueblood at mid court. Chadd stole the tip and dumped in a free throw on the play to put the Cubs in the lead 59-56 as the quarter buzzer sounded.

The Cubs set fire to the hardwood in the final fourth period by bombing the nets for 29 points while Schulte settled for 20.

Schulte blasted the nets for 9 of 18 field goal attempts the first period, and 7 of 15 the second period for a .470 shooting percentage the first half. The Cubs hit on 15 shots of 40 the first half and 22 of 29 the

Outscoring their host in the second period Reelsville dropped in 13 points while close behind Russellville added 11. At the end of the half both teams stood even at 25 all.

STAR SIDELINED Lebanon — Lebanon’s high scoring ace Rick Mount clutched his chest in action at Hinkle’s Field House last night and collapsed to the floor after scoring 26 points against Attucks. Mount has been reported to have been suffering from blood poisoning that occured from an infected corn on his toe. Doctors said the collapse was probably caused by side effects of anti-biotics he had taken during the week. The All-American was not hospitalized. Attucks took over after the Lebanon high school star left the game to win the contest 80-
