Lend To High Cards Not Away From Them By Alfred Sheinwold _ One advantage of leading toward your high cards is that you may be able to drive out a missing honor without wasting one of your own in the process. It would have made a big difference in aoday’s hand. West dealer Neither side vulnerable NORTH A A 107 V K 8 3 O A942 , * A 10 8 WEST EAST A J A Q 8 6 4 VAQJ765 <9 9 2 0 K853 0 Q 1076 ♦ KQ A 753 SOUTH AK9537 V 104 O J _ AJ9642 Wtat North Ex* .South 1 9? Double Pass 2 A Paa 2 NT Pass 3 A P*a 4 A All Pass Opening lead — A K South won the first trick with the king of clubs and led a low trump to dummy’s king. When this held, declarer returned the low trump from dummy, using his own queen to drive out West’s ace. West thereupon led the jack of clubs, and the slam went down the drain. If declarer ruffed with dummy’s jack of hearts. East’s ten would become the top trump. If declarer did anything else, East would ruff the club with the ten of hearts to defeat the contract at once. North lamented long and loud, pointing out that six diamonds and six notrump were unbeatable. South observed that six hearts was a very reasonable contract and that he was very unlucky to run into such a terrible club break. CHOICE South’s actual play gave him some protection against A-10-x-x of trumps in the West hand but left him exposed to a bad break in clubs. It was a poor choice because West had opened South’s bid suit instead of leading through one of dummy’s suits. Whenever an opponent leads your suit, look out for a bad break. South should make the slam by playing the trumps properly. After winning the second trick with dummy’s king of hearts, South should get to his hand with the queen of spades and lead another low trump. West takes the ace of hearts and leads a club, but dummy can ruff with the jack and then South can draw the last trump with the queen.

DAILY QUESTION As dealer, you hold: S-8 4 H A 4 D-10 2 C-Q J 9 8 7 4 2. What do you say? ANSWER: Paxa. Do not make a shutout bid (of three clubs) when you have a side in addition to your long suit.
