Sheinwold on Bridge
Bridge Hand Presents An Unusual Challenge By Alfred Sheinwold Bor years you’ve looked at bridge tmwria with only one thought In mind: How to make the contract. Today we have a different kind of challenge: How does South go down— without making a single bad play?
Howard Schenken opened the North hand with one club, the only forcing opening bid in his Big Club system .Peter Leventritt responded one diamond to show a very poor hand.
The rest of the bidding was pretty normal. North bid hearts and diamonds and then raised — — J — — w r-< 11 * V AT+

South must lose a heart and a club, but how can he lose anything else? Think about it. UNUSUAL. LEAD Look at the opening lead. Ed Rosen, well-known Chicago expert, deduced dummy’s distribution from the bidding and decided that a trump lead might throw a monkey wrench into the works. It did.

Declarer saw a way to get rid of dummy’s losing club. He therefore put up dummy’s ace of diamonds to win the first
trick, cashed the ace of spades, overtook the next spade with the king, and led the jack of spades to discard dummy’s singleton dub. Can you blame him? Wouldn’t any good player do the same thing? It cost Leventritt his contract. East ruffed the third round of spades, and South still had to lose a trump trick to West and a heart trick to East. Leventritt Is a good sport, but if you happen to meet him don’t remind him of this hand. Nobody likes to be the sensation of a tournament because he managed to go down at a cold contract.
