SALT SUBSTITUTE H you're planning to do much driving this winter, be sure to carry a box of sand, instead of salt; in the trunk of your car. Be* sides being detrimental to the V surface of your car, salt slush will freeze very quickly on a real cold day. Sand, on the other hand, will give your car a rough surface on which to get traction no matter what the temperature. START AT THE BOTTOM When washing walls in your home, always start at the bottom and work up. This way the water dripping will not have an opportunity of setting the dirt on the lower half of the wall. Of course, if your home was electrically heated there would be little need to wash walls. In fact, cleaning in general becomes much less of a chore in a home heated by electricity. HOOSIER HAPPENINGS January 17*22 Annual Farm Science Days at Purdue University.

—Finance Board struct a water storage tank because water pressure to industrial plants is low and they are unable to use fire protection sprinkler systems. Huntington, $100,000, to construck a new air strip on the edge of the Huntingdon Reservoir dam site because Industries need an airport and the federal government is taking over the present strip for use in building the dam. Rensselaer, $20,000, to construct a hanger for planes at the Jasper Airport because Industries need it. The board also advanced past several earlier and larger applications for small appeals for money from the interest-free Postwar Planning Revolving Fund. They are for comprehensive planning. The grants: Angola, $5,721 Sullivan County, $5,446 Union City, $1,300 Miami County, $2,305 France said Connersville, Jeffersonville, North Manchester and LaFontaine had earlier requests for loans from the fund but the amounts sought were so large it will be more than a year before any one of them can be gpranted. He said the fund has only $15,000 in it and the total of the four approved today nearly consumes the fund. France said all four of the lazge applicants are expected to be able to borrow soon from the Industrial Development Fund. The board also approved an installment repayment play for Ridgeville which ran into financial problems and is unable to repay the Postmaster Fund $13,000 now due. Branlgin said that trying to get full amount back now might be “like trying to foreclose on a church.” Ridgeville will be permitted to pay back $2,000 a year. Hie board tentatively aproved without taking final action a request by New Albany for a loan to qualify for federal highway funds by producing a comprehensive transportation plan as part of the Louisville area.

World Mourns Shastri's Death Sy United Prett International The world today mourned the passing of Prime Minister Lai Bahadur Shastri of India, who died attempting to bring peace to his country. From Washington to London to Moscow to Tokyo, messages of condolence poured into New Delhi. Shastri, 61, died unexpectedly of a heart attack in Tashkent, in the soviet Union, where he had been engaged in a summit conference with President Mohammad Ayub Khan of Pakistan to settle their differences over the disputed state of Kashmir. The conference ended Monday after Shastri and Khan signed a declaration renouncing the use of force. Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin, who acted as mediator during the Pakistani - Indian conference, immediately issued a statement saying the Russian people bowed their heads for Shastri, a man “whose life was beautiful. ,, In Washington, President Johnson called Shastri’s death “a grievous blow to the hopes of mankind for peace and progress.”

Sources in Washington said there was a question as to who actually is running the Burundo government in the absence of the premier and king. The Burundi demand said the diplomats “rightly or wrongly” were suspected of having contacted opposition “conspirators”—presumably those who participated last Oct. 19 in an abortive coup against the government o f Mwami King
