By Rick Du Brow HOLLYWOOD UPI — One cf the secrets of success is not to tamper with success, network television programmers are learning this season. At all three networks, they 'ti&ve learned the hard way, as -a number of series which had ahown previous ratings strength now have become extremely wobbly because of high echelon "doctoring” by people who have ,to justify their jobs by doing aome thing — anything. At ABC-TV, for instance, "Ben Casey” seems on Its last tegs, thanks In considerable measure to the somebodies who, In the last few years, haven’t been able to resist altering what was once the network’s biggest hit. Several seasons back, for example, “Casey” was moved .from its Monday slot to Wednesdays, where it was scheduled opposite “The Beverly Hillbillies,” which promptly murdered it in the statistics. - ABC-TV seemed to have Vi teamed a lesson because It put *Casey” back on Mondays, but this season — in keeping with the briefly hot trend of "continuing” stories or soap operas -— the network’s medical hero had the added burden each |teek of running subplots that dilute the already-thin main plots. f ABC-TV pulled a couple of other boners as well. “Peyton Place,” very successful in the eatings last season, was expanded for this semester from two to three episodes a week, and the show has fallen off Sharply in popularity. ^ Likewise, somebody at the getwerk decided that Robert Lansing should be replaced as the lead of “12 O’Clock High” because of his alleged lack of appeal to youngsters. He was replaced, as it turned out, by a fellow older than Lansing, Paul Burke, who is a good actor but Is not as well suited for the role ds Lansing was. NBC-TV’s “Dr. Kildare” admittedly wasn’t breaking any records as a ratings-getter when it was on for an hour each week last season — but now that it has been split into two half-hours weekly it has just about sealed its fate in the numbers game. v At CBS-TV, “Rawhide” was trotting along year after year, not setting any world records either in the ratings, but comfortable and very easy to take. Then somebody at the network decided to dump star Eric Fleming and toss in a couple of new regulars. The show has gotten slaughtered in the rat-

ings ever since the changes. There should be several network jobs opening up soon. High up.

Soviet Mission To M. Viet Mam MOSCOW UPI—The Kremlin today dispatched a highranking mission to North Viet Nam, apparently to boost Soviet aid to the communist Asia regime. If true, the mission could increase Hanoi's resistance to a negotiated peace In Viet Nam. Western observers in Moscow said an offer of more Russian aid to North Viet Nam would amount to another Soviet rejection to President Johnson’s efforts for a joint peace offensive on Viet Nam. The mission was headed by Alexander Shelepin, young right-hand man to Soviet Communist party chief Leonid Brezhnev. It included experts on armaments and rocket warfare strategy. Hie official news agency Tass said Shelepin left Moscow by plane bound for Hanoi at the invitation of the North Vietnamese government, but it did not disclose his route. This led to speculation about a possible stopover in Communist CSiina. The fastest route from Moscow to Hanoi Is through Communist China, but in recent weeks Peking has accused the Soviet Unkm of "conspiracy” with the United States and granded the Kremlin’s military aid to North Viet Nam “inadequate.”

a Red victory. Such ia the background of the peace offensive with its accompanying bombing lull—now almost two weeks eta. It Is an operation of many complicated parts, some of them not yet evident to the public. Johnson himself is calling the signals, but In close consultation with Secretary of State Dean Rusk, Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara and McGeorge Bundy, his special assistant for national security. Although there was almost no advance notice of the worldwide effort, the program was under intensive study by Johnson and his top aides for about six weeks before it was begun. HOLLYWOOD UPI —Praise be: Jackie Gleason, the great one, revives “The Honeymooners” this Saturday night with the original cast. Hie magnificent fat man has coralled Art Carney to reprise Ms role as sewer worker Ed Norton, and Audrey Meadows to play the long-suffering Alice Kramden. Gleason, naturally, will slip back into his bus driver’s uniform as that irrascible knucklehead, Ralph Kramden. . Even the old dilapidated Kramden apartment will be rebuilt exactly as it was nine long years ago when last "The Honeymooners” was filmed In New York City. Saturday night’s CBS-TV of-

wfB be beamed from Gleason’s new headquarters, the Miami Beach Auditorium, with 2,000 persona in the audience. What’s more, it will be a musical version of. television’s classic characters — perhaps the most memorable comedy show In the history of televis-

ion. Only 39 half-hours were preserved on film, the balance were taped and lost to posterity. Still, those 39 segments have been run so many times that even the great one is overwhelmed by public response. And Jackie’s as delighted as

anyone that Kramden vfdee again, even if it is only for a single outing. "Kramden is just as big, verbose and sentimental as ever,” Gleason said, chuckling with anticipation. "And Norton is beautiful. During rehearsals Art Camey had me breaking up

just as be used to. "As for Audrey, she looks better than she did 10 years ago. We haven’t been together since the spring of 1956, but we no sooner said hello than it seemed as if we’d never been apart. The same old easy-going relationship was there.

"The title of the Aow li Adoption,’ and if the audience doesn’t weep and laugh, then I give up. It's really a touching bit.” Gleason’s usual format, "The American Scene Magazine,” will be abandoned for this night only.

LBJ Continues Peace Offensive WASHINGTON UPI — As long as there’s a chance of positive results, President Johnson is determined to keep his “peace offensive” going-de-spite "grandstanding” charges and congressional pressure for resumption of the air raids on North Viet Nam. The cMef Executive has set no time limit for deciding whether to continue the current ! pause or resume bombing. He re-examines the situation daily with senior military and diplomatic advisers. And should it become necessary to resume bombing, Johnson’s will not be a snap decision, it will be slow, reluctant and painful and reached only after the President is convinced
