Bank Interest Increased
NEW YORK UPI — The nation’s bonks entered 19M with a fresh increase in interest rates, confidence that industry plans no drastic change in borrowing because of the higher tag on money, and with g to 10 per cent gains in 1965 profits to report to stockholders. Commercial banks’ prims rates went up to 6 per cent from 4% per cent close on the heels of cm early December increase in the Federal Reserve Board’s discount rate to 4% from 4 per cent. One year earlier, a similar increase in banks’ prime rates failed because of White House opposition. This time around, however, the government, which a month earlier had forced rollbacks in nonferrous metals prices in the name of counter-inflation, war only mildly critical of the FRB move. Paradoxically, an attempt to get Interest rates higher on loans to finance companies failed several weeks earlier for lack of support. Bankers went to the Fall convention of the American Bankers Association in Chicago with a strong desire for a broad Increase in rates muted by uncertainty as to what the reaction would be from the White House. As for the possible effect of the rate boosts on the economy, a poll of 225 purchasing executives of huge companies by the National Association of Purchasing Agents indicated the capital spending boom shows signs of further growth, with half the members reporting their companies’ 1966 capital spending wiU exceed the 1965 rate. Industry’s need for money to finance expansion and modernization of plant and equipment, exceeding as always the capacity of intemally-ganerated funds, helped to push bank earnings higher. These gains were not achieved without effort, however. There was further computerization of service and record-keeping functions, inter-bank competition stiffened, as did competition from insurance c o m p a n i e s, pension funds and other non-bank institutions investing. To offset increased costs, the banks sought to convert idle computer time into a revenueproducing business through which they offered to handle accounting inventory control and other record-keeping functions
of their clients on a fee basis. Thin however, came under an attack In Congress and other sources that is expected to lead toward an evaluation of what "outside’’ services the panics win be able to offer in the future. Congress in 1965 also became the principal arena for resolving the Issue of bank mergers. The Robertson bin, aimed at curbing the ability of the Justice Department to challenge bank mergers and at forcing the department to drop pending action against six merged banks, failed to dear Congress in 1965. Obstacles in the form of amendments, some of which had nothing to do with bank mergers at all and one of which was directed at curbing the independence of the FRB (which ironically enough supported the Robertson bill from the outset) delayed the bill’s progress. With the failure of the Robertson bill'to dear Congress in 1965, the government resumed pressure for divestiture of a number of branches of Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. under the terms of a successful anti-trust action earlier in the year. This case was one cl the six that would be exempted under terms of the Robertson bill. Before the year ended, however, the bank won a tactical ruling that would delay the process until shortly before Congress was due to reconvene. Other notable events In the bank calendar was the shift by Chase Manhattan Bank to a national from a state charter. The bank, formed with the 1955 merger of Chase National and the Manhattan Co., elected to retain the latter’s state charter at the time of the merger because at the time It was not planning national expansion, which it now Is considering which it will be freer to do under a national charter. While Chase was planning the switch, rival First National City Bank of New York replaced it in the number one spot in terms of the number of branch offices and in deposits, loans and assets.
LONG DISTANCE KICK BALTIMORE (UPI) — Bert Rechichar of Baltimore hooted a 56-yard field goal against the Chicago Bears in Sept. 27, 1953, a kick that still stands as a National Football League distance record.

ARE lop ears the same as cauliflower ears? They are totally different. Lop ears is a slang word used to describe ears that noticeably and markedly protrude from the side of the head. This abnormality is not due to a birth injury but is rather a developWSm mental one during the pregnancy period. A cauliflower ear is the result Hof 'a hemorrhage into the tissue of the outer ear after a severe blow Dr. Coleman or injury. Boxers and wrestlers often have auch knobby changes of the ears because of repeated injuries. The unsightly cauliflower ears can sometimes be avoided if the injury is treated immediately. The blood can be released and with pressure bandaging the ears may return to normal size and shape. Lop ears can be most distressing and embarrassing to children who are mgde sensitive about their appearance. Plastic surgery is a safe and relatively simple procedure for improving the appearance of the ears. The results are most gratifying. • • • What is meant by a shutdown of the kidneys? In health, the kidneys act as an elaborate filtering system. Waste products, chemicals and minerals are removed from the blood stream and are passed out of the body in the urine. When the kidneys are damaged by long-standing infection or other diseases, this filtering mechanism may not be completely effective and waste products accumulate in the blood. When the kidneys stop functioning or shut down, a condition called uremia may set in. Uremia is a toxic condition which formerly was far more serious than It is today. One of the remarkable accomplishments of modern adenca is the artificial kidney which can take over the vital Job of the kidney if a shut-down does (O iMAXtag
occur. This process, called dialysis, is a life-saving one and can be carried on until the kidneys once again return to health. • • • Do men pass through a change of life comparable to the menopause of women? The male menopause is a phrase adopted to indicate the physical and emotional changes that sometimes occur in the late middle life of men. Menopause is a word derived from the Greek Menos (month) and pauein (to cease). Menopause, therefore, means the permanent cessation of menstruation. A wide variety-of symptoms may accompany this change of life in women. In men there may be some changes in the vigor, in the need for sleep, and in the food requirements in late middle life. These changes are attributed to hormone alterations that occur sometimes in later years. If a hormone deficiency is suspected, they sametimes can be replaced in the male in much the same way that they can be regulated in the female during the change of life. • • • Does acidosis mean too much acid In the body? There is no relationship between acidosis and the familiar expression of "having too much acid’’. Acidosis is a disturbance of the balance between add and alkali in the blood. This balance is one of the moat exact and delicate mechanisms In the body. It can be disturbed by severs loss of fluid, by diarrhea and vomiting, liver disease and uncontrolled diabetes. "Too much add in the body" has very little scientific meaning. "Everything I eat turns to add" and "I have an acid stomach” are poor expiiawaHnwa for chronic indigestion, stomach and intestinal complaints. Blimps Still Have Place ■y Unitad Press International OAKLAND. Calif UPI—The craft flew low and slow over the San Francisco Bay Area. Suddenly its two engines ceased throbbing and there was only a deafening silence. The six newsmen aboard instinctively reached for seat belts—but there weren’t any. The pilot turned and laughed: "You can’t do this in an airplane.”

x no xn.cu were aouara me Goodyear blimp "Columbia.” one of two small blimps still flying in the Western Hemisphere and both owned by the tire and rubber firm. In his nerve-jangling way, the pilot had proven his point: that maybe there was still something besides just air left in lighter-than-air travel. After all, if an airplane’s engines suddenly quit there would be no place to go but down. The blimp just drifted along. For most persons the dream of commercial lighter-than-air flight ended In the ashes of the giant dirigible HIndenburg which crashed at Lakehurst, N. J., In 1937 with 97 persons aboard. Twenty-six of them were killed in the blaze that consumed the airship in seconds. But there still are men who think there’s future for dirigibles. One of these is R. H. Hobensack, a lighter-than-air pioneer who now works for Goodyear’s aviation products office in Palo Alto, Calif. Hobensack 1 o g g e d 17,500 hours at the controls of airships after getting his pilot’s license in 1930. Right now he’s helping develop the firm’s vee-balloon program. The vee-balloon looks like a Siamese twin barrage balloon that’s joined at the nose. Among other things, it’s
uocu wj unng lumoer irom isolated regions. “It could increase logging operations by 40 per cent,” Hobensack said. However, he thinks there s much more for airships to do than haul logs down from remote regions. “Someday people are going to slow down and really see this country of ours,” he said. “When that day comes, the airship will be back in business. “Today people like to say T flew to New York in four hours,’ but the time will come when they’ll be saying T flew to New York and saw something besides space. “If people want to get there in a hurry the plane is the only means. But for comfort and scenic value the airship is the only way to fly.” Hobensack pulled some photos from his desk drawer. The pictures were of the interior of the German dirigible as any ocean liner. There was a bar, beautiful staterooms, even a grand piano. Before she was decommissioned in 1937, the Graf Zeppelin made 590 flights, cruised 1,053-391 miles and carried 40.250 passengers on 144 ocean crossings without a mishap.
