Editorial-Wise The Driver Is Responsible The National Safety Council predicts that 360 to 440 persons will lose their lives in traffic accidents across the nation during the long New Year's holiday weekend. This is indeed a grim prediction especially after the tragic Christmas holiday weekend during which 721 perished in traffic mishaps over the United States. Indiana had 26 traffic deaths last weekend and the total for the year has now passed all previous records. How can this slaughter on the highways be reduced? Law enforcement officers cannot do it alone. There must be cooperation by the drivers of motor vehicles. Many fatalities have resulted from drivers of autos and trucks taking needless chances. One example is at railroad crossings and another in attempting to pass when the distance is not adequate with other vehicles approaching. There is no doubt that excessive speed, driving at night, and too many drinks cause a large percentage of these highway tragedies. Simply, it boils down to this, the responsibility is up to the driver of a car or truck. He should be thinking about his own life, those of possible passengers and the other fellow. It is said “coming events cast their shadow before them” and last weekend's traffic carnage should be a warning to each and every driver in traffic.

A Local TEENAGER'S VIEW By Janet Staub Ai the half-awako high school basketball fans trundled up the booster bus steps, the cry was: “all the way, all the way, Cubs going all the way.” The cry went out as the booster bus left at 8:30 on Wednesday to go to the Huntington Tournament.

The booster bus for those of you who may be confused by the term i* a school bus hired by the students to go to out of town games. With each student paying a small fee all bus and driver expense is paid for. The booster buses are usually very i noisy going to the games, but usually calm down after it unless the boosters’ team won and then it may be a little hard to

hear yourself think.
