President Harry 8, Truman In 1949. Those on slavery, forced labor and the political rights of women were sent there by the late President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Others have never been sent to the Senate. The study group, headed by Louis B. Sohn, Harvard professor of international law, submitted its report during the White House Conference on International Cooperation, which ended Wednesday night. Among the factors holding up Senate action in the past have been arguments that the conventions set precedents for U.N. intervention in civil rights disputes in the United States. The theme of the Sohn report was that the United States now has made such progress on domestic civil rights legislation that the traditional objections to ratificaton should no longer
apply.
Group Favors Senate Action WASHINGTON UPI—A toplevel citizens’ study panel believes President Johnson should now press in earnest for Sena!£ ratification of seven United Nations conventions on human rights, one of them dating back 16 years. The conventions deal with • slavery, forced labor, genocide, political and economic rights of [women, and discrimination in employment and in education. None has been ratified by [ the Senate, though all have received between 26 and 70 ratifications from other countries. The genocide convention was first sent to the Senate by

Hughes of Allen Circuit Court, who sentenced Davis, overruled a motion for a new trial. Davis’ attorney said he would take steps to appeal the sentence to Indiana Supreme Court.

Tense Situation Exists in Laos

From the giver's viewpoint, it's more satisfying to give diamond necklaces and private planes completely lined in mink. It proves to yourself how rich and generous you are. But from the viewpoint of the intelligent young lady on the receiving end, such things are, frankly, a little embarrassing. (Can you honestly see her in a minklined plane?) She would rather have a VILLAGER... or several VILLAGERS, artfully put together as in the illustration. And after all, it’s her present.. emPmat LUCIA'S FABRICS 509 SOUTH INDIANA STREET

Jurors Ponder Slayer's Fate

Flee To West BAD HERSFELD, Germany UPI — Three young East Germans, one of them a 24-year-old nurse, fled to West Germany Wednesday through Communist border minefields and barbed wire, police said. They told police they were dissatisfied with political conditions in East Germany.
Man Is Killed LA PORTE, UPI —Marvin Alsup, 72, was killed Sunday night when fire caused by an exploding space heater enveloped a three-room cottage where he lived at a trailer camp near Hamlet.
The central issue in the long trial was Pope’s sanity. The defense contended he was possessed by a “hideous demon” when he shot three persons to death and wounded a fourth at Big Springs, Neb. The prosecution asserted he was a coldblooded killer out for big game. Attorneys for the former college football star asked the jury to find him innocent by reason of insanity and have him placed in a mental institution. The prosecution asked for the death
penalty.
The jury can return one of three verdicts: Innocent by reason of insanity; guilty with presiding judge Robert Van Pelt to determine sentence; or guilty with Pope to die in the electric chair. In any case it must be unanimous. The jurors received the case from Judge Van Pelt at 5:15 p.m. He told the jury that the only real issue in the case was Pope’s sanity since the shy, sharp-featured collegian has admitted the robbery slayings.
