The Daily Banner, Greencastle, Putnam County, 30 November 1965 — Page 2
S Th« Daily Banner, Graancastlc, Indiana Tuesday, November 30, 1965 Editorial-Wise Slaughter On The Highways A total of 611 traffic accident deaths in the United States during the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend ia staggering and most appalling. The number of victims far exceeded the toll predicted by the National Safety Council and other traffic experts across the nation. What actually causes this high death rate and how can it be reduced? There is no doubt that speed, night driving and drinking are definite factors in these street and highway tragedies. Today's automobiles are powerful and many drivers apparently do not realize just how powerful until it is too late. Driving during the hours of darkness is also hazardous as many people find it hard to judge distances safely when passing and approaching other vehicles. Sociable drinks, in many cases result in one too many, and at night this is doubly dangerous. In other words, as it has been said, "If you drink don't drive” and "If you drive don’t drink.” State police in Indiana and the rest of the states have been instructed and are doing their best to enforce safe driving. Evidently there are just not enough of them to carry out this program. Of course, there are more motor vehicles and more people on the nation's streets and highways each year which also makes the situation most difficult. The Daily Banner is of the opinion that human slaughter on the highways is one of the top. if not the top problem confronting the people of these United States today.
